Girls AND New York

Why do girls love NYC so much and fantasize about it? I know this predates Sex in the City but I think that lifestyle--dynamic, fun, no commitment, city life--has everything to do with it.

I am not particularly a city person, though I am from San Francisco, and this female phenomenom has always bugged me a bit. It seems like every girl I know is just dying to go to NYC.

Your thoughts?

Thats a really good question...I think it has to partially do with the way New York is portrayed in the media...how many chick flicks have you seen that are set in NY, also many TV shows are set in NY. Sex in the City may be predated by the phenomenon, but the show has likely strenghtened girls' love of the city.

I will say this though. For a straight guy, NY is great since there are more females than males in Manhattan and many guys are gay which further reduces the number of males....so guys basically control the hook up market here.

I Love New York!

I love NYC because of the atmosphere, the culture, the diversity. It's the center of the arts and theatre, which is what I'm going into. You're never bored, the people there are a kind of all their own. The art galleries, the sights, the museums, the shows, etc. It's so lively! Everyone is accepted and does their own thing. I especially love Greenwich Village. I consider myself indie, like my username and an activist. I'm really into all that and NYC just seems to suite me.

And you forgot the shopping! I'm not a typical girl, I don't really care about all that, but most do. The "posh-ness", the stores, the fashion, etc. A lot of girls LOVE that. I don't really think, "hey, I'm a girl... so I love NYC!" I just like it because of who I am.

True. I agree that this city has a lot of fun stuff...for both guys and girls.

Yes, Greenwich Village is a great area (even though I don't live there anymore)...I still sometimes hang out there...it has some of the best bars and nightclubs in the city. NYU (w/ Rudy Guiliani's help) helped make the area so awesome by gentrifying it, and its really one of the coolest parts of the city to hang out in these days. Other fun areas in NY are Soho and the upper east side.

The city is awesome...i spend any spare minute I can there. All these great concerts go on in small clubs and large venues, open street markets (warmer seasons), broadway shows, strolling through central park, great restaurants, awesome stores, overall ENERGY IS GREAT, great clubs, unfortunately for girls there isn't such a wide variety of guys to choose from (60:40 girl:guy ratio)...but nonetheless...still awesome place!!!

lol.. the Met Studies dept. at NYU would hate you for saying that.

The city is awesome. Everyone in New York looks like a model. I loved New York. You can do anything. I bumped into Matt Damon outside Starbucks Astor Pl like tons of times.

Hey Cathy :D

Maybe, maybe not, but they know I'd be right, only a fool would deny the city, and specifically Greenwich Village is not better off today than back in the day. That area is awesome today because NYU gentrified it....nobody is afraid to hang out there at night anymore.

plus the sports. Sum chicks are into sports.

not all girls <3 ny
but for me it's.. shopping, convenience, shopping, food, and having so much to do
idk. i think an = # of guys love city, too

I don't know any guys excited about heading off to New York. In fact, a few guys I know are almost disgusted with this girl-NYC phenomenom, as I am.

I don't know where this comes from, I am extremely conservative, so that may be it, but I know non-conservative males who feel the same way--that girls go there to be irresponsible and have fun.

i don't know, it''s not a male hometown territorial issue either.

what are you talking about cmaher

The phenomenon of girls dreaming about moving to NYC after high school and what people feel about it. I dont like it and I think there's something wrong. It rubs me the wrong way.

That's what I'm talking about, "mattistotle".

ur the only person i ever heard who feel thats way, nor do i feel its only girls... why you so spiteful?

im a guy excited to move off to nyc, and i live on long island...so there.

now you know at least one.

im the same as nightboy , nightboy you live by me right?

yeah, lake grove, but i go to school at chaminade

how about that snow?

snow ****es me off, im snowed in cuz my car sucks in the snow. When it snowed wednesday it slid into a curb and popped a tire lol

"The phenomenon of girls dreaming about moving to NYC after high school and what people feel about it. I dont like it and I think there's something wrong. It rubs me the wrong way."

umm, they probably want to move cuz they live somewhere boring and are tired of being small town losers. haha, jk but i think its a dream for a lot of ppl bc its like a major metropolitan center and theres so much to do. also, traditionally nyc has always been the place ppl go to 'make it' (other than la and hollywood i suppose) ex: countless tv shows based on the premise of making it in ny, the song 'new york, new york' blablabla. new york basically just rocks the socks off of most other places.
