wow, great answer! thanks so much for your advice! :)

I can’t think of any reason why it would matter if you didn’t do a well known character…it might even work in your favor. besides, what really matters is you pick someone who really means something to you, and it sounds like thats what you did. :)

I agree with calmom, the course catalogue and directory are the best way to get a feel for what academic life is like. The department websites, as she also mentioned, are great resources.

(As for the pencil book business, that’s not just Barnard-speak, but what everyone used to call it. The directory of classes used to literally be a book with a pencil attached so I guess you could mark a class or sign yourself up or something. )

As has been mentioned, Barnard classes are female dominated, not exclusively female (except for your required First Year English and seminar classes). I happen to be taking all my classes at Barnard this semester. One of them is about 15 people and that’s all girls. The other three have a majority of girls, but definitely guys are in them. Columbia classes are integrated as expected, with numbers varying depending on the class.

@lorrainedelis

Haha yesss You are right! Hope this doesn’t count as being rude, but may I ask what’s your nationality? XD

I know! I don’t want to do an interview either But I might have to do it since it shows interest in the school or something =/ And I live in NYC… so it’ll be weird if I don’t go! Eek!

Hopefully I’ll finish my first drafts for the Barnard essays over Thanksgiving! I really need to start working on my college apps/essays…

im from texas too i love how barely anyone knows about this school.

haha no thats not rude at all! I’m American (and I live in Texas)…what about you? haha since you live in nyc I’m guessing you’re American too though. and sorry if you mean ethnicity I’m caucasian…haha well good luck on your interview! I bet you’ll do great

I need to start too! haha its just that whenever I look at the supplements, I put them off because they’re so intimidating…I want my answers to be good!! I’m going to try to get it all done this weekend though! Its just so scary submitting it!

I interviewed two days ago! I reallllyyyy wanna go to Barnard. Especially after I went to the campus.

I really hope I get in too! I wish I could’ve applied ED but my parents wouldn’t let me for financial reasons. My test scores are good, but not spectacular…I’m waiting for my Subject Tests to come back.

This could be a dumb question, but how much weight do Subject Tests have for admission? Because you cannot see the midranges on the website. My ACT score was good, but my SAT was better, and I’m just worried about Subject Tests bringing me down.

As for the supplement, I’ve written them all except the “Woman from literature/history” one. I’m trying to think, but it’s not working out so much haha.

Is a 1950 SAT score too low for Barnard…(i am african american though). I applied ED somewhere else, but I really like Barnard too…so I might submit an RD app here.

My daughter, who is not a URM and has no other hook, had lower than 1950 SAT scores, though Barnard may not have been aware of it, as she submitted ACT instead. But the ACT score wasn’t that hot either (28) - and when d. enrolled, Barnard had her SAT scores on file, probably picked up from her high school transcript.

D. was admitted RD in 2006, which I believe was the tightest year for Barnard admissions in recent history – so the answer is – no, your score is not “too low”.

My d had a strong GPA, near the top of her class, and some really great but not earth shattering EC’s - so basically it comes down to this: test scores are just one of a number of factors considered. 25% of all enrolled students have test scores in the bottom quartile. You can’t get accepted unless you apply – and you won’t know whether or not you can get in unless you try.

So go for it — and good luck!

thank you so much!!
my gpa, ECs and everything make me very competitive for top schools. So that’s so nice to hear.

Wow, it’s been awhile since someone posted here… lol

@lorrainedelis,

Sorry for the late reply! I forgot to check this thread! >.<
Haha yeah, I’m American also! As for ethnicity, I’m Asian… Asians = good at math but I suck at math cry
Thanks, I’ll need all the luck I can get!

I know! Everytime I see those supplements, I just end up logging off… But I’m definitely starting them on Friday (25th) and I also need to start on my commonapp essays! I brainstormed around 10 ideas and I’m planning to write all ten and let my teacher pick which one’s the strongest! (I know, I’m giving myself a lot more work than needed sigh…)

Good luck to us both! (And the others! :D)

haha thats ok its refreshing that you’re not all crazy geniuses!
(and trust me I’m not good at math either!)

you’re going to write 10 essays?! wow well good luck! I got my commonapp done but not the supplements! (I should get them done!!) I’ll try to start friday (the 26th right? you shouldn’t do them tomorrow, its thanksgiving!) too, but they’re so scary!! good but hard questions…so where else are you applying?

yep good luck!! I can’t wait to hear how everyone’s apps go…I hope we all get in!!

I went and visited for the first time today and I love it SO much! But it is so expensive, I don’t think I can afford it :(

RD if I don’t get into my ED school!

I’ve loved Barnard for a looooong time. But I’m also really annoyed they changed their supplement questions. I did them last spring because I assumed they wouldn’t change, now 3 out of the 4 are gone. Ahhhh!

Reviving the thread here! The ED threads are making me realize I’m too excited/anxious/etc and can’t wait until late March!

ahhh im so nervous!!! my scores are quite low for barnard (29 ACT) soo i feel like barnard isnt gonna happen for me
sigh its my dream

Runninglover, your ACT is higher than my daughter’s was. My d. was admitted RD in 2006 (which was the most selective year in Barnard’s history).

I thought Barnard was a reach for my d. but in hindsight it was a match. Partly because we know now, of course, that she got in – but also because I think I realize now that those test scores were a lot less important than I though they were. Anyway, a 29 ACT is perfectly fine for Barnard – it is within the middle 50% median range. For some reason, CC’er think that colleges only admit people with SAT’s in the top 25%; I think that means that CC’ers can’t do math. I’ve always believed that 25% of students admitted to colleges have SAT scores in the bottom 25th percentile. Silly me.

Hello RD girls! I have to admit, Im kind of upset i did not do ED to Barnard! Too many people I know already know what college they are going to when I’m just finishing up my apps! >.< The other day I was reread the unafraid booklet they sent out& wowww! My heart skipped a beat lol!!

How is everyone doing? Are you girls on winter break yet? (I know Im not )
Have you submitted your application for Barnard yet?

mdh625, I feel exactly the same! But then again, I didn’t really have the means to do ED–I wasn’t 100% sure about Barnard as my top choice and money remains an issue. Similarly, these past few days I’ve been revisiting a Barnard mail-out. Sigh…

Yes, I’m finally on winter break! And I haven’t submitted yet. I’ve been outrageously busy so this break will be spent completing all supplements! When do you get out for break mdh?

Anyone else wanna join the Barnard RD pity party (for having to wait until March, that is)? :P
