I remember hearing through the grapevine that girls in SCS are given dorms together - is this true?
And, more generally, how does the housing stuff work?

Everyone at CMU will receive a packet in the mail about housing sometime after they send in their deposit, You rank your top three dorm choices (there's info online about the dorms, too) and you room type preference- single/double/triple/quad. Most freshmen end up in standard doubles, which are reasonably sized two person rooms with a shared floor bathroom (not as bad as it sounds). You also fill out something with about 5 questions like "are you a night owl or an early bird?" and "are you a smoker? could you live with a smoker?". CMU tries to pair you with someone in the same major, or if that doesn't work, the same school. So some number of SCS girls room together- I did - but some don't just because the numbers don't work out or whatever. You are assigned to a dorm in the order that your deposit was received, so get that in soon if you know CMU is your top choice. In general, girls are more likely to end up with their top choice because there are 2 all male dorms that no one wants, but only 1 all female dorm that some people do want. Also, Morewood E tower, a top choice for freshmen, has 3 floors of girls and only 2 of guys.
