Girls Who Code Immersion Program 2016

@ananyadoodles @tiger27 same, I’m in AP CS right now. I might start a club next year though.

@ananyadoodles I got that email as well, and yeah i am currently taking AP computer science. I guess that’s why?

@purplepanda8 @ portugueselover- From their email it appears the program may not be challenging for people who have taken or are taking AP computer science

I received an email saying that I was accepted to one of the Atlanta programs! I’m so happy! Congrats to everyone else that was accepted!

I didn’t get an email and my portal hasn’t changed at all but other Bay Area people have. I think I’m rejected. Congratulations to everyone who got in!

I’m taking AP CS as well, and it makes me sad that I didn’t get accepted because the program looks so fun! I quite honestly don’t really know the material that well, but oh well :-??

The portal finally works!!! Just accepted my classroom just in case I dont get into the other summer programs I am waiting on hearing about.

Got rejected from Bay Area, glad the wait’s over! Hope everyone has an amazing time

is it just me or is the portal still not loading…i’m trying to confirm my spot on the waitlist but the portal won’t load

@beachnostalgia Ya, the portal isn’t loading for me either. I was able to confirm my spot in the program and then the portal went out.

@ananyadoodles @tiger27 @portugueselover I heard in the past they let students in even if they had previously taken AP computer science. Why are they changing their policy now?

I think that there must have been many applications this year, and not enough programs to support everyone. The main objective of GWC is to bring interest in CS to girls who normally wouldn’t have tried it, so they probably accepted applicants who had limited experience. The assumption here is that if you’re in AP CS, you probably have lots of experience and interest and don’t need to learn explore the topic further at the level of the program.

@hungryandbored - Yes and that assumption maybe incorrect. At least in my case my exposure to computer science is just starting and was hoping this program would help strengthen my interest and broaden my exposure. There was no mention of AP computer science being an exclusion criteria.

@ananyadoodles Yes exactly! For me my experience in computer science has been pretty discouraging and I was hoping that this program would allow me to see the fun of it. I haven’t really learned anything in AP computer science either so I hoped that I would be able to improve. I guess the decision has been made, but I can’t help but feel a bit annoyed that AP computer science was an automatic deny.

I also took APCS and got rejected :frowning: I was actually looking forward to this program and thought that I would learn a lot here. We really don’t do that much in APCS anyways, just write boring programs. I guess the program wouldn’t really be too challenging for me but I would still learn a lot, like making apps and website and doing robotics.

to confirm your spot on the waitlist, am i correct that all you have to do is answer one question? the option to submit application is unavailable for me still

@hungryandbored That makes sense. I’m still disappointed, but I’m thankful that I had the opportunity to take comp sci while in hs. I was hoping to get more direction after taking AP comp sci because there are no other options at my school.

I looked at the curriculum and the whole program is just an intro to various languages you can code with like scratch, python. html, javascript and css

Got waitlisted for the DC program :-/ Probably because of my commute (about an hour) to the location. Anyone have any idea the chances of getting in?

You should get in. They told us (at least in Seattle) that everyone who gets waitlisted gets in eventually. Though they also told us no one got flat out rejected so…
