What are the girls like at MIT? Are they mostly science nerds or are they well-rounded people?

Two of my good friends is going there this year as freshmen. One's a cheerleader and the other's a swimmer. They are both really outgoing and fun, so obviously it doesn't seem like all MIT girls fall under that "science nerd" category.

i know a girl going there.. shes a nerd

What! Who's your cheerleader friend, rice_boy? Haha, small world. (For those who don't know, I'm a cheerleader and former captain of the MIT squad.)

The thing about MIT girls (and MIT people in general) is that we manage to be both science/engineering nerds and well-rounded people at the same time.

To take the cheerleading squad as an example -- we've got almost all the majors at MIT represented, and we're pretty good at what we do. Many times we explain cheerleading concepts using physics ("So you want to make sure during stunting that your arms never go below 90 degrees, or else there will be too much torque on them for you to get them back up"), and we're probably one of the only cheerleading squads in the country where someone (me) could wear a "DNA: The Code of Life" t-shirt to practice and have people say, "Hey, cool shirt!"

But we're still a cheerleading squad and we're still girls and everybody's worried that it's going to rain during the football game tomorrow because our hair will get frizzy. :)

when I have visited MIT, I have been pleasantly surprised at the well-roundedness of both guys and girls. And in terms of looks, the girls walking around campus seemed just as cute, hot, whatever as the girls walking around our local state u. (granted, I am a middle aged woman. But I think I would be able to tell if there was a significant difference in appearances.) The boys on the other hand, did look different. A lot more Asians and a lot more boys of modest stature at MIT, and a lot more blacks and Hispanics, and big, hulking, football player types at the state u.

I'm a guy and I'm the handsome'st devil you ever could find. Meanwhile, I count 5 good-looking girls here are MIT.

molliebat, she cheered for my high school and i don't know if MIT wanted her to cheer or not; and she is a freshman this year. name is laura fallon.

Oh, boo. She must have decided she didn't want to cheer here -- she didn't try out. :(

If you talk to her anytime and she's like "I'm so sad that I'm not cheering cause cheerleading rocks" tell her that we're always excited to get more experienced cheerleaders!

mollie, I'm curious. What field are you majoring in?

Mollie is a biology/BCS major. :D.

http://mollie.mitblogs.com

Haha, thanks Timur.

Anytime. <3.

And I must say, MIT is the only school I know of that has women who spend part of the day in a cheerleading outfit and part of the day in a labcoat. That's just so awesome. :D

not caltech?

no cheerleaders at caltech!! :-P

What a pity. Well, I would assume that MIT doesn't have a very strong football team

I think we're about average for our division.

Be very careful, though, about the assumptions you're making about MIT students. There are many different types of MIT students, and many of them aren't what you'd automatically think of when you think of MIT.

Sorry, I didn't mean to misjudge MIT students. Pardon my misconceptions. :)

No, it's okay. I mean, stereotypes often persist because there's at least some grain of truth to them. I just want you (and all the other prospectives) to be aware that there's a lot more to MIT students than you'd assume right off the bat.

A lot of us are a very complex mix of intelligence and normality -- my boyfriend, for example, is a (very cute) aero/astro major who LOVES airplanes and designs airfoils in his sleep, but is also a freestyle skiier -- nationally ranked and a former Junior Olympian.

We're all smart, but that doesn't mean you can tell we're MIT students just by looking at us.
