GIS Geography Degree

Is a BA in Geography with emphasis in GIS a good option? I’ve been doing a lot of research in Geography as a major and have heard that GIS is a growing field that has a lot of employment options. I was wondering if anybody else has experience in this field or perhaps has some helpful tips or recommendations.

Also to note: I wouldn’t mind working for an environmental company, oil and gas, perhaps a federal agency such as the USGS and so forth. Does a degree in Geography allow employment within these fields? Or does a concentration in physical geography offer better options?

Thank you.

Hi, geography major here with coursework in GIS, geology, programming, and urban planning. I’ll be interning for an apartment company this summer but many of my friends in the major are either interning or working full time for environmental firms and prior to 2015, oil and natural gas companies. USGS, the Census, DoD, and other federal, state, and local agencies do hire geography majors although these tend to be quite competitive.

Keep in mind that geography is an incredibly broad major. At my school a geography student can study everything from hydrologic science to regional economics and still be in the same department.
