Applying to UCs, aiming for UCLA/UCSD/UCI. Will a good essay help? And is it hard to get in as an English major?

Female, Asian
CA resident

Academic GPA Non-weighted: 3.45
Weighted GPA: Around 3.8 or 3.9
APs: US History (3), World History (3), Bio (2), English (In progress), Calc AB (In progress)
Honors: English (A/A), Chem (B/C), Precal (B/C)
Rank: 18%

Your SAT is not exceptional and your GPA is far too low. The average UCLA admitted student has a 4.38 GPA. You’re probably not going to make it.

At our school I don’t even think it’s possible to have a 4.38 GPA… I think our Valedictorian’s GPA is 4.1 or so. But yea, although UCLA might be a reach, i’m not discouraged. My brother got in… he has slightly better grades/test scores but less ECs. Will applying for English as a major make it any harder for me?
