Give me one or two compelling reasons why one must go for UCLA over Berkeley

the title says it all.

is there anything that we have not known yet?

it really depends on your perspective major…

personally though, i would go to berkeley. however, the dorms in berkeley are expensive…
and going to LA would be cheaper since im only an hour away… so i might just go to UCLA

The weather and the city. So many things to do!

“is there anything that we have not known yet?”

What don’t you know?
Well for me, it’s the weather, the college atmosphere, and the food
Academics are good, but engineering at Cal is better… and more difficult… (I’m an engineer)

It really depends on your major and what you’re looking for in a college.

none only location
academically Berkeley is superior
any reason to go to UCLA is just superficial

i picked ucla because 1) the weather 2) my parents think that the town around berkeley and telegraph street does not seem particularly safe.

I did a summer session at Berkeley in 2009. I was accepted to both and chose UCLA (and so glad I did!)

Yes I knew Berkeley is considered a more elite school, but I knew that I wouldn’t be happy there.

A few things I didn’t like about Berkeley: hobos, hobos, and more hobos (it gets really annoying getting asked for change every few minutes); the area around there is dirty; the campus is really hilly (it took me forever to get from one place to another); the campus doesn’t have that happy feel that I get from UCLA (my opinion); the weather sucks

The classes were fine though.

The most compelling reason: Because you like UCLA better and would be happier there. That’s the reason most people at UCLA chose it over Berkeley.

UCLA’s better at some majors, gets more funding for research. The quarter system allows for more flexibility.

Here’s what I would do: research each department you’re interested in, see which one you’re impressed with more. That way, you’re not making a “superficial” decision.

Regarding engineering, Berkeley’s better but UCLA is basically right on top of there too.

For pre-medsm Berkeley O-chem rapes the hell out of your GPA so it’s not a good place to be to get into medical school (UCLA is a bit better).

Berkeley is more academically superior, but it doesn’t really make a difference for undergrads, and LA ranks pretty high, too. Wherever you go, you are bound to meet people who are idiots and people who are super intelligent. U.S. high schools, especially public high schools, are basically a joke. People who get 4.7 GPA and loads of EC activities are usually ‘Streber (a German word, don’t really know the English equivalent)’. I would suggest you to give more weights to the non-academic factors.

I turned down Berkeley and came to LA, and I don’t regret. I’m happy here. Berkeley is too close to home (my parents work in the bay area), so I’ve got more freedom in LA, which is cool.

However, if I were picking a graduate school I would go to Berkeley.

Berkeley isn’t “academically superior” to UCLA. That’s complete BS, It all depends on the programs being examined. Berkeley’s amazing for Pure, Natural, and Mathematical Sciences and Engineering, Computing, and Technology for example, but sucks balls at Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacology, and Health Sciences (and saying ‘but UCSF is basically it’s medical school’ doesn’t count)

[High Impact Universities | World University Rankings | Results for 2010](http://www.highimpactuniversities.com/rpi.html)

If we’re talking about undergrad, they’re basically the same, if we’re talking about grad programs, berkeley is #1 in the two aforementioned categories, and it, with harvard and caltech, are the only universities with ‘dream faculty.’ That being said, it doesn’t dominate in some other categories.

while UCLA isn’t #1 in any category, it also doesn’t have a ranking lower than #9 in any of its rankings (berkeley’s lowest is 104), so it’s extremely well balanced. (it should be noted that the only other university having all of its rankings in the top 10 is harvard)

i made a spreadsheet a while back for myself to try to organize some of the rankings for the top 10, in addition to some other schools of interest in california. You can look at it here:

https://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AiIuqnwv1zHMdElSUWdSMG4xSkdfYWoxSWMydEN3LUE&hl=en&authkey=CJ_O0o8G#gid=0

You got rejected at Berkeley

^LOL!!

I’m engineering major, so I say Berkeley is more superior in that field, but undergrad is pretty much all the same. I heard that UCLA has high rankings in psychology and other north campus majors?

I’m not going to lie, i did, but i SIR’d to UCLA before i even knew, and i doubt it would have had much of an impact on my intention of going to UCLA.

believe me or not, my anti-berkelosity has to do with not the fact that i got rejected, but simply that the claim that berkeley’s academically superior to UCLA is not always (and in many cases simply isn’t) true.

I’m not sure there’s a compelling reason to choose either/or. If we’re talking about graduate school, that’s a different story though.

Is UCLA where the Berkeley rejects go?

^ Yes it is. That is precisely why I turned down Berkeley to go to UCLA. Because I got rejected by Cal.

/endsarcasm.

Or for me, its also where the Cal spring admits go.
