Give me some good indie bands.

I want some good stuff.

Hehehe... Now THIS is my type of thread =)

The Staples:
Of Montreal, Belle & Sebastian, The Unicorns* (or Islands), Built to Spill, Pavement, Pixies, The Mountain Goats, Sufjan Stevens, Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade, Broken Social Scene, Elliott Smith, Neutral Milk Hotel

Aaaannnndddd... the Others:
Arizona, the Olivia Tremor Control, the Late B.P. Helium, the Gerbils, Arms/the Harlem Shakes, Agent Simple, the National, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Neko Case/the New Pornographers/A.C. Newman/Zumpano/Destroyer (they all overlap =D), Everthus the Deadbeats, A Faulty Chromosome (not even signed yet, so they're so indie that they're NOT even indie!), Faces on Film, the Fiery Furnaces, Andrew Bird, the Foundry Field Recordings, the Silver Jews, the French Kicks, Ideal Free Distribution...

Yikes! I got a little carried away =) There's a lot more where that came from, though...

*PS- I got my screenname from one of their songs, so you know they have to be good =)

lol..... hmm i like the besnard lakes, beirut, washington social club, tokyo police club, louis xiv, and guillemots. haha these are my current loves!

Oh yeah! Beirut and Guillemots fo' sho'!

(I'm going through this strange phase where I say things like fo' realz and fo' sho' and.... well, basically anything that contains "fo'" and makes me seem like a fool =D)

i don't know why you're limiting this to indie bands, but let's see...

neutral milk hotel, the decemberists, of montreal, belle & sebastian, oliver tremor control, beirut. all good bands =)

Because the more obscure and unknown a band is, the better they are, obviously. There's something so satisfying about remarking in a condescending tone, "Ohh... I don't like [insert band name here]... They're so mainstream." Hee. =)

...
I heart sarcasm =D

I assume you're going by the indie rock genre and not the labels...
The Shins, Yo La Tengo, Pavement, Radiohead, Beck, The Flaming Lips, (another vote for) Belle and Sebastian, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Decemberists. Indie bands is a big genre, more detail for us means better advice.

I LOVE THE SHINS

just wanted to let you guys know.

btw is switchfoot indie or alternative?

alternative

BTW did Taxiride make it big here in the U.S.? Their music recieved alot of airplay in Asia while I was there...don't know about the U.S. They are an Australian band. Check out "Oh yeah."

I thought switchfoot was indie. hmmm

btw I dont want no cult-ish type of indie bands.

Good "indie" bands: Why? (lo-fi indie rock with quirky, stream of consciousness lyrics with a hint of hip-hop, folk, and electronica), Xiu Xiu (very unique art rock, emotionally charged lyrics), M. Ward (lo-fi indie rock mixed with folk), Subtle (a mix of experimental rock and avant-garde hip-hop), These Are Powers ("ghost-punk", very different)

If you want some good indie hip-hop, check out the anticon label. They are making some of the most creative, honest music ever. They have proved that hip-hop can be a highly artful musical form by taking the genre as far as they can... breaking so many conventions of the genre... yet keeping the underground/anti-corporate mindset of the great hip-hop of old.

Switchfoot is NOT indie...more like Christian rock...which is a bit of an oxymoron but to each his own.

I'm really into Ingrid Michaelson and Rosie Thomas right now but I also like Colbie Caillat and Matt Costa although they aren't really indie.

Yeah, Why? is excellent. The lyrics are amazing. Download Rubber Traits... it's great!

Switchfoot is signed to a major label, so, no... they're not indie =)

If you don't want "cult-ish" indie bands, I'd suggest the Shins, Wolf Parade, Pavement, or the Decemberists (who are now actually on a major label). They're all pretty well known.

Radiohead's popularity on last.fm is slightly frightening.

And I like Pavement.

Haha, this is starting to sound like a conversation on Questionable Content.

Camera Obscura. Arcade Fire. Damien Rice ("O" preferably). Sufjan Stevens. Explosions in the Sky. Although you can hardly call some of these "indie bands," it's good music nonetheless.

The Icarus Line...quiet for a year or two but coming out with a new album...west coast band..good european following...starting to tour again...in Canada this week with wolfmother

Switchfoot never declared them self a "Christian rock band". People just decided to put them under than category just because most of the members are confirmed Christians. they mention Christianity in subtle ways but they're never like "GO praise Jesus NOW" They just like talking about life after death and morals.

Switchfoot is insightful.

My Morning Jacket!!!! <--they were mentioned on CC somehwere the other day. Try "off the record," "dondante," and "it beats 4 u"
pretty songs
