I am a Canadian student who is going into grade 11 IB and i am posting this thread to figure out my chances for a few colleges . I want to go into pre med but i'm not sure yet about my major. Some things about me:

-I am a South Asian male who came to Canada when i was 13 years old( I am 16 now) and knew very little English. will that help since i have improved a lot.
-I have good grades so far with an upward trend with straight As two previous years in Pre IB
-I do not need any financial aid for JHU or for any other colleges.

SAT:
Math:760
Writing:720
Critical Reading:650
Total:2130(I got this without much studying. Im pretty confident i can get a 2200+)

Volunteer/Summer Activities: ( I hope my volunteering shows my passion for helping the community and others)
By the time i am done i will have about 450 hours.
-Bridgepoint Hospital
-Canadian Cancer Society
-Youth Assisting Youth
-Canadian Red Cross
-Senior's Care for North Toronto
-Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

ECs(yes, my ECs are my weak point... However, volunteering should count under ECs too and i have one year to improve)
-Junior Soccer Team(city runner-ups)
-Empowered Student Partnership(9,10)
-Founder of a Free Tutor Center( I have been tutoring three kids for 3 years)
-Tech Crew(9,10)
-Class Rep(10)
-Asian Club(9,10)
-Passionate Squash, Ping Pong and Cricket player(past 6 years)

I have a bunch of math awards but nothing big enough to brag about. Any advice is appreciated and i will work hard to improve. Remember, i still have a year to do that. Here are a few colleges i am currently thinking about:

Johns Hopkins(ED)
Cornell
Duke
University of Michigan- Ann Arbor
UNC-Chapel Hill
University of Wisconsin-Madison
McGill

Please suggest more schools if you have any in mind. Please chance me honestly.. i can take it! Anyway, thanks a lot to everyone.

Are your volunteer activities outside of school? if so, i suggest you start a club at your school. I know you do a lot of community service but it looks alot better to be "Founder/President of Medical Club" (or anything along those lines) at your school. Get someone to start with you and be co-presidents if you want to. You'd have leadership experience in something you're passionate about (not just stuff like Class Rep). and you'll also have the experience of starting something of your own, planning events, and "nurturing" your club to become something big and visionary (if that's a word).

It'll be a plus too seeing that you'll be a juinor next year. You'll have 2 years to make your club thrive. Oh and if your club is successful, you'll have a good essay to write. if not, you'll still have a good essay to write. What counts is that you have passion for something, and you've shown it by not only being active in Canadian Cancer Society, etc, but you've started something at your own school to spread the passion/get others involved.

University of Washington (in Seattle, Washington) has one of the top med schools in the country. Good thing for you is that it's pretty much a safety/low match

As 20091990 have already suggested, I recommened University of Washington in Seattle. Great school for pre-med and biology.

Assuming you have at least 700+ on your SATIIs,
Johns Hopkins (ED) - slight reach
Cornell - slight reach
Duke - slight match
UMich - match
UNC - match
UWisc - match

20091990 and RealM, thanks a lot for your comments!

Yes these volunteer activities are outside of school. I agree that i should start some sort of club next year, which i am going to try to do so thanks for the heads up.

I have heard about the importance of essays and recs. A CC member said to me once, "its your grades and scores that get your application looked at, but its your essay and recs that get you accepted."

Anyway, i will definitely look into University of Washington. thanks for the chances guys

I am looking into some of the colleges you are applying to except i am gonna major in electrical engineering probably.

as for your chances:
Johns Hopkins:medium reach
Cornell:medium reach
Duke:reach
University of Michigan:high match
University of North Carolina:low reach/high match

You may want to look into U of Chicago although its pretty selective. You are a good cantidate but make sure to write strong, creative essays that will really capture the attention of the college. I think you have a decent shot at Johns Hopkins .. just try to raise your SAT some more and think positive.

Duke:reach
University of Michigan: match
Cornell:high reach
UNC:low reach
McGill:IN
University of Wisconsin-Madison:match/safety

Good luck with your dream school but try not to think too much about it.

thanks for the comments guys. u of chicago.. yea my cousin goes there so i should put that on my list too. McGill is my top choice i guess in Canada but id rather go to the states. any others guys??
