Give me the 'Bama pitch

On our way home to Lexington, KY from NOLA on Spring Break, my Michigan-bound senior convinced me to pull off at Tuscaloosa to see 'Bama. I begrudgingly obliged and was blown away by the campus. Beautiful! As a Northwestern undergrad, Texas law school grad, Kentucky faculty spouse, and Michigan mom, I’m no stranger to pretty campuses. But, I was amazed by UAB. My rising-high-school D was, too, and asked me, her school snob mom, how I would feel if she went to Alabama? I didn’t know what to say. So, sell me. My D is smart, but not in a bookish way. She’s loaded with personality and has a twisted sense of humor. She’s very pretty, but tends to run with the nerdy crowd, not the social group. She will likely be a broadcast journalism major. She is a KKG legacy, but, even though she’s very outgoing, I’m not sure she’s cut out for hard-core Greek life. So, the next time she asks me about 'Bama, what should I say?

Are you asking about UAB (University of Alabama Birmingham) or University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa?

Tuscaloosa. Isn’t that the main campus?

Yes. However, UAB is the campus in Birmingham. ;)

Thanks for the clarification! I know so little about 'Bama.

I was pretty sure you meant Tuscaloosa but you said UAB, so just wanted to be sure. Not that UAB is not nice (it is!) but I haven’t heard anyone being wowed by that campus.

This would be a good thread to read - it covers a lot of what you are asking. But feel free to post questions.

Well, the next time your D asks you about Bama, you should say, “let’s set up a tour.”

:)

welcome.

Yes, set up a tour. After much indecision and multiple campus visits. we were inspired to visit Tuscaloosa by the comments on this thread two years ago, and our son (who sounds a lot like your daughter, Pink) is absolutely thriving. The UA experience is even better than it sounds here on CC, and now our smarty pants younger son (2360 SAT) has already committed to UA as well. We are from Montgomery County, Maryland, and still (but less often) get “the look” when we say we are Bama Bound, but Alabama is a winner not just on the football field.

Do try to revisit Bama… it sounds like you may have just done a “drive around”. .I think you’ll be very impressed by all the new facilities.

If you do revisit, first set up the campus tour online…try for an early morning time! Don’t bother with the “info session”, you’ll get that info here pretty much on the Alabama forum on College Confidential which is VERY active.*
http://talk.college-confidential.com/university-alabama/

In the email include:

Student’s name and contact info

Date and time of the Campus tour that you’ve reserved.

GPA and test scores (include likely NMSF if applicable)

Likely majors*

Career interests (including med, law, etc)

Anything particular that you want to see. *If you have an interest in seeing the new Science and Engineering Complex, let them know.

Since your D has a broadcasting interest, she’ll want to see Bama’s TV and radio studios.

^^You should make this post a sticky at the top of the UA forum - It get’s re-posted enough!

I second.

Roll Tide!

I think I’ll make a new thread where we can post what needs to be put in a sticky thread, and then we’ll create a master thread and request it to become a stickly.

:)

Another thing: Bama is super-easy to apply to. You don’t have to write all those dumb essays about the One Selfless Amazing Service-to-Others Experience That Made You What You Are Today. (As the author of Crazy U points out, writing too many of those essays could turn you into Eddie Haskell. Bwahahaha.)

BTW…Bama Mom here. My son is a junior on the NMF scholarship. He wouldn’t dream of going anywhere else. I’m from Boston; DH is from Louisville (and roots for Kentucky in the NCAA, except when he’s rooting for Louisville :)). We live in NC. Roll Tide!
