So my list of accepted schools is not as great as I'd hoped it be, but I do have three good schools and the option of appealing Berkeley.

Check out this poll I put together on my site and let me know your thoughts!

Uh…You got into Columbia…If you get accepted into Cal through the appeal then go there, otherwise Columbia ALL THE WAYYYYY

Columbia’s price tag is just such a hard thing to get over. Tier 1 MBA programs would tack another 100k onto my debt. $200k in debt is not something to shrug off lightly…

From what I hear overturning Cal’s decision by appeal is close to impossible. I’m curious how many people have actually done it and what their reasons were.

you should note thats its Columbia General Studies on your website.

edit:also, as a business/economics student i think this would a great time for you to apply the concept of opportunity costs to your situation.

Oops, Didn’t see that it was for GS… Hmm…yeah that does seem like a lot lol… Davis is actually a college town, so I think you’d have a good time there. You wouldn’t even need a car, most students there ride their bikes.

JetForce- yes that is exactly what this is all about - there are OC’s associated with each school - not just on a brand level but also on a life level - what are you thinking?

and i’m not looking to pass of GS as CC - i know all the weird stigma that is associated with the two. Even though GS is a backdoor to Columbia, it’s still going to require the same amount of work (just costs more in terms of lacking FA)

I’d just goto davis and try to get the best grades you can. Even if you reapplied with 2 more semesters of 4.0 to LA and Berkeley you probably won’t get in unless you retook that F you got at your old school. Also, how did you go from calculus 1 to calculus 3 without taking calculus 2?

oops. i left it off. Fall term- Sophomore year… updated that page

Yeh, that stupid F is so annoying. They offer Discrete math at LACC, but I figured there was no way I could just jump back in that after 10 years…

thanks for your feedback…

When you say: “Cumulative GPA (with retaken Sociology class): 2.94”, are you assuming the A you got in sociology at LACC replaces the F you got at University of Maryland? The UCs and most other 4 year schools do not replace F grades unless the institution you got the F at is willing to let you use academic renewal with an equivalent course from another school. You should check to make sure that University Of Maryland allows you to do so or you might have an inaccurate idea of what your gpa really is.

I got a D in Sociology in MD and and an F in Discrete Math at Tulane. The GPA from those two schools isn’t really that important because it doesn’t transfer over to the new institution. However, the A I received in Sociology this past fall at LACC does transfer over to the UC schools.

Also, when I spoke to Berkeley admissions counselor back in the fall, she said the retaken class WOULD replace the D when Berkeley calculated my GPA, which is why she recommended I retake Discrete Math as well.

Hi!

About your question to appealing for Berkeley…they want letters of recommendation from people you have worked with, whether that be your professors, advisor, counselors, people who know that you are very pursuant in your respective field.
They also take into consideration personal reasons.

My freshmen friend was rejected from Berkeley, but appealed with a lot of personal issues that had caused her to drop her GPA and her appeal was accepted.

Best of luck. [:

I’m stressing over whether or not to appeal Berkeley - I have two great rec letters. One from former teacher and one from highly respected businessman who I’ve worked with for many years and wrote a really good letter.

I just feel like I want to move one with my decision instead of waiting another six weeks.

arg

i would recommend to appeal. you’ll know that at least you tried and see how it goes, it might work out for the best and you might get accepted. maybe you can tell them about columbia. by the way, how did you get into columbia?

therealist- yes, you are probably right. I’ll never know unless I go for it… The only problem is we are trying to plan out move for the next year. And throwing in a trip to southeast Asia for a few weeks. Hope to have a house lined up before we go… anyway…

in regards to Columbia, I dropped out of college 10 years ago and have had been running my own business for a while. I got straight A’s this year in CC and had two very powerful rec letters. Also, my essay was pretty good. I also wanted it so bad that I made sure they knew I would succeed there. Stupidly, I did NOT do this for the UC system. dumb dumb dumb

(yes, i’m shamelessly over promoting) :)
