I am class ranked number 1 as an incoming junior for my high school class It has always been my dream to attend a top college but my act scores are just average
I thought about taking the SAT would this change anything?
If not give me some encouragement because I feel my entire future lies on these scores

Go ahead. Some people do better on the SAT.

They correlate pretty well, in my experience. If your ACT score is low, there’s no reason to think you’ll get an SAT score that would make you competitive at top schools.
What you need is practice (specifically, lots of practice tests). They are not intelligence tests. You’ll probably never get a 2400 or a 36, but you can definitely get your scores higher.
Also, try and figure out why you’re not doing well. For example, I initially did badly on my SAT and ACT tests because I didn’t have the necessary math background. After I learned Algebra II, I did a lot better.

Eh…standardized tests. Bleh. Just learn the tricks of the trade and you’ll do fine. No one cares about the SAT or ACT after you’ve been admitted to college.

But they are really important for college admissions and merit aid.

True. But OP’s entire future does not depend on the SAT.

Oh, of course not. But people always think their future depends on the one thing they’re lacking in.

OP, what grade are you in and have you looked at test-optional schools?

OP’s imminent future does, however.

I did much better at the SAT. I don’t do well with science. My ACT was a 28 and my SAT was a 2090. I highly recommend Kaplan Test Prep if you’re willing to put in the time.

Never hurts to try! Best of luck!

OP is a rising junior. Class of 2015

Goodness, I missed that part. OP if you’re a rising junior you’re going to improve so much on standardized tests by the end of the year. To give you some perspective, sophomore year I got a 170 ish on the PSAT, then junior year I got a 190 ish on the PSAT, and when I took the SAT in May I got a 2000. Now I’m studying over the summer to hopefully bring my score up to a 2200 in October.

Thanks to all of you for the encouragement
