Giving professor gifts?

A professor has just given me a research position in his lab. I'm planning to go to his office and present him a gift as a gesture of thanks.

Do you think this is a good idea? and will not be interpretted as a student "bribing " profs for special favors (hint better grades)?

Thanks

I think it is a good thing to express appreciation, but a gift should probably wait until the work in the position is completed, or until a special occasion.

I agree with Mini. A letter of appreciation - -and doing an exemplary job -- are the "gifts" that would be appropriate including after you finish the internship.

OTOH, nothing wrong with making cookies to bring on the first day at work.

Gift should be a very small token of appreciation...cookies , as above, or special chocolates accompanied by a handwritten note on an attractive card, but something small and symbolic not valuable and expensive--could also be something typical from your original hometown if you come from an "interesting" place.
