I kind of made it more on “what would you rather go to” because it’s basically personal preference when it comes to these schools.

These are very interesting responses! As someone who’s certainly a little biased (I’m a senior at Groton), I’ve given a lot of thought and seen a lot of statistics on the differences between all the top boarding schools. I applied to 6 boarding schools, and what it came down to for me was Groton and Exeter. I chose Groton because of its size and its strong athletics, and if I had to do it all over again, I wouldn’t change anything. There are all sorts of rankings out there, but as someone who has friends at all of these schools, I would say this:

Groton and Exeter are almost certainly the two best boarding schools in the country (surely at least in NE). Their average SAT scores, college matriculations, and standard of acceptance will all vouch for that. St. Paul’s is almost exactly like Groton, except a little bigger and 100% boarding, and it is also very academically elite. I would put those three at the top, with Groton and Exeter tied for 1st. Andover is after those three, with fairly depressing athletic facilities, yet very strong academics. Milton, Choate, Hotchkiss, Deerfield, and Middlesex are schools I would call 2nd tier. They are certainly great schools, but they can’t really compete with SAGE (not an official acronym, but I like it :P). I don’t know anything about Lawrenceville, except that they send a TON of students to Princeton. I can’t rank them, though, since I don’t know much about them.

As a patriotic Grotonian, I think this is important to say. To all those rating Groton in the bottom 5 on the GLADCHEMMS list, take a look at this article. It’s Boston Magazine’s 2010 rating of private schools around Boston (N.B., the list excludes Exeter, Choate, Hotchkiss, St. Paul’s, and Lawrenceville). I don’t completely agree with the ranking, since they rank Middlesex above Andover, but the statistics are all very revealing. Just food for thought.

I hear what you’re saying Retter. What I learned through this thread and also from the other +/- thread on cc is that the schools one would assume would rank high on this forum did not get knocked out of the park. On the +/- thread, for example, Choate has been maintaining the spot between #1 and #3. As we all know,GLADCHEMMS, covers most of the most popular East Coast schools. Instead of putting them in tier brackets we truly get a sense of what is liked vs. which is most prestigious.

“Milton, Choate, Hotchkiss, Deerfield, and Middlesex are schools I would call 2nd tier. They are certainly great schools, but they can’t really compete with SAGE”

Very interesting (and bold!) statement. Please tell what makes it true.

should there be a combined rating? like, for every #1 rating, the school gets 10 points, then for #2 is 9 points, #3 is 7 points, etc., #10 is one point… then add them up and re-organize the order?

or would that be too complicated?
