glamourbaby & other NU Students!!

hey, me again....question...does NU have big school spirit? in regards to both sports and school activities....thanks guys

NWern does have a lot of school spirit. For the most part, kids are very very proud of their school and like the fact that it has both great academics and decent sports. Football and basketball games are a ton of fun and they all get a huge turnout, especially now that you dont have to pay tickets in advance. The school now just charges a small fee to your parents and all you have to do is show your student ID and you're in.

Like I said, most kids really really love the school and are happy to be there. That does a lot for the general atmosphere of the school. (obviously). It also makes the hard work tolerable.

Thank the Associated Student Government for that activity fee..... We rock, lol!!!!! :)

I would agree that Northwestern students have school spirit, at least compared to other schools of the same academic caliber. However, since we are in the Big 10, and we play those HUGE schools, our spirit does look quite meager compared to, say, Michigan or Ohio State. People go to football/basketball games, but since there are so many other things to do in and around Evanston (unlike large public schools in the middle of nowhere), not everyone goes to sporting events. However, if you are looking for hard-core school spirit, you can certainly find it at NU. In regards to non-sports-related things, I think students are very spirited. Dance Marathon is a huge event, as is Dillo Day and other things of which I am yet unaware.

dildo day???

i can't even imagine what that's about

is it only me that can read, "dillo day"?

lolol i read it, i was responding to wildcat's misread/"haha, let's pretend i misread" post

ok fine kids, IM PRETENDING DAMNIT

and what is a dillo

ArmaDillo....

I may be mistaken, but i think its kinda like a spring concert thing. Bands and stuff, no?

This is from the Undergrad admission website:

"The roots of Northwestern's end-of-the-year celebration, Mayfest, reach back to the 1890s, when students would celebrate the "renunciation of the May Queen of the temporal world for a spiritual one," according to a 1951 history of the event. Although little is known about the early days, May Day, or May Fete, was originally a celebration of the women of Northwestern. The crowning of the May Queen was the central event, and the pomp included a Maypole dance and cotillion. May Day expanded to May Week in 1946 to accommodate a women's sing, men's sing, and an honors ceremony.

Nowadays, Mayfest is a weeklong celebration capped by a more recent tradition, Armadillo Day. In 1972, Northwestern students from Texas held a small celebration in honor of the armadillo. More than 25 years later, 'Dillo Day is the culmination of Mayfest and an all-day Saturday event on the lakefront with nationally known and campus bands, games, and vendors."

Basically its one giant 3 day long campus wide party that often results in many and many arrests for various things as you might imagine. I know last year the Wailers were there in concert and many others. I haven't experienced yet but i guess its awesome from what I hear! A lot of the frats just do crazy things that weekend.
