Global Engagement Fellowship Program?

Has anyone here participated in the Global Engagement Fellowship Program? What were your experiences?

My D is participating in the Global Engagement Fellowship Program. This is her second year. She has enjoyed it. It’s my impression that she has learned a lot, it has facilitated her involvement with multiple international student organizations from the beginning of her time on campus, and she has met other students with mutual interests. She studied abroad summer 2015 and is working on studying abroad for the 2016-2017 academic year. It sounds like she has had a lot of support and guidance in the program and, of course, the study abroad stipend is a big help. I highly recommend it if your student is interested in studying abroad.

Thanks for the info @ohmmom ! It’s good to know that there is guidance and support with this program. My D had already been planning to participate in a in 6 month exchange program in her junior year so this only really adds one class and a summer abroad. I was a bit surprised at the estimated cost of the summer abroad trip she’s thinking about so the stipend will be a big help.

For the summer program, she’s thinking about it say that it starts immediately after spring semester ends with a two week program on campus before going abroad. I was wondering how this works with the dorm. Will she be able to stay for two extra weeks in the dorm?

S1 has avoided the global programs (against our advice). He seems laser-focused on getting his academic career completed as soon as possible. His logic was that for his program, all of the courses he could take when abroad would be meaningless to his degree program…effectively setting him back a semester. We think it will be something he regrets later, but it can be tough to tell an NMS much about something related to their academic career.

3scoutsmom, I’m not sure how the dorms work in staying on campus for two more weeks. My experiences with OU leads me to assume they have those details figured out.

Between the GEF adviser and D’s study abroad adviser (SA advisers are based on geographic region), D found a very affordable study abroad program that she loved. She’s heading back to the same university for two semesters. The quality of advisement has definitely made this is an easy process. By being in the GEF program, all kinds of information relating to study abroad and other paths to becoming more globally aware and involved are pretty much served up on a silver platter and encouraged/required. Her SA adviser has also been very knowledgeable, helpful, and accessible.

@ohmmom do you recall when and how you learned your D was accepted into the Global Engagement Fellowship? We haven’t heard anything yet. Anyone else hear back yet?

My D is waiting to hear about the Global Engagement Fellowship as well. I would love to know if you have heard anything since April 7th. Wishing your D all the best!

Those who were accepted into the program have already been notified. I think it was earlier this month. Nothing was sent to those who were not accepted. :expressionless:

I find it irritating that scholarships/fellowships don’t bother to notify the kids that don’t get in. DD didn’t make it either.

I thought it was a courtesy to either receive a response as to whether you were accepted or denied. Interesting.

My daughter was just notified today that she has been selected. We had figured she was out of the running…maybe she was an alternate or something? Anyway, she’s thrilled either way!

@July18 Congratulations!!! How was she notified?

She was notified via email. She’s an International Studies major, the GEF and the National Merit study abroad stipend opens up a lot of options.
Fingers crossed that there are others still being notified!
I also find it frustrating when there is no notice of they didn’t get scholarships.

D got a letter of regret today. At least they did send something. I think her focus was too narrow. It wasn’t anything she was counting on so we’re good. @July18 congratulations! I’m glad an international studies major got it!

Sorry, I posted a reply to the first post prior to reading the remaining posts and it was not relevant. I’m trying to delete it by overwriting because I could not find a way to just delete.
