"Global Studies" at UCLA

I've always been torn in regards to what major I should pursue. I have very varied interests, and very varied academic dislikes. What is known about the UCLA "Global Studies" major? What is heard around campus about it?

Any info at all?
Thank you very much!

The global studies major is fairly new (just started spring quarter of last year). You should explore their main site, and all the links on the right side of the page to learn more about it:

<a href="http://www.international.ucla.edu/idps/globalstudies/%5B/url%5D">http://www.international.ucla.edu/idps/globalstudies/</a></p>

i'm minoring in it.

global studies is basically the study of the effects of globalization on three main aspects: governance, culture, and economics/markets. the major is interdepartmental, meaning you'll get classes from a bunch of different departments (poli sci, history, econ, etc.) the major's requirements looks about the same as other social science's majors with departmental honors, meaning the global studies major seems to have more work (senior honors thesis plus level 6 foreign language). the global studies program also highly recommends you to do travel study in mexico, shanghai, or hong kong, and i believe france is now an option too.

i've only taken global studies 1 so far, but that class was probably one of the best if not the best intro lecture i've taken here at UCLA. the course reader was huge though (800 pages). for that class, they also brought in a lot of really good guest speakers, so that was nice. i'd say take global studies 1 to see if you like it (it counts as a GE too).

now how would global studies compare to international development studies? the latter is my official major right now, but my areas of interest kind of reside in the middle; i'm very interested in art & culture, but in the global context. is there any way to assess which major would be better for me aside from comparing them class by class? as in, what is emphasized in each?

[sorry this is such a specific question...i should probably wait and ask an admin. or prof. but i figured it was worth a shot to go from personal experience first]

thanks.

Stuckinthemist, I am in the exact position as you. International Development Studies is what I applied with and was eligible for the Honors Program, but now looking at the sites and majors, I'm trying to distinguish this with Global Studies. I'm more into the cultural and historical aspect of international studies, rather than the economic, but I dont know which is better for what. They're too similar, I think.

Also, what do you think we're going to do with one of these majors, lol? My parents ask me this every darn day and I cant come up with an answer. Any ideas? Haha. Am I going to be a ...diploma? haha

And also, what do u guys think about the USC International Relations program? Which is better? I love that USC has Study Abroad in Greece, but LA doesn't. They're more into...3rd world countries, I believe.

I'm trying to decide between LA and SC with International Studies (Double Major with Communications). Which is better?

Let me know!

AIM: Neurotic I Swear

to put it in a very very general way,

International development studies is focused on the developing world

Global Studies is the study of globalization and its effects

of course, there's tons of overlap there as well.

here's the UC's study abroad programs: <a href="http://www.eap.ucop.edu/%5B/url%5D">http://www.eap.ucop.edu/</a></p>

Hi everyone,
I was wondering what did you all decide on, now that it has been almost 10 years since you had to make this decision. I am in the same predicament that you all were in!
Help much needed! Thanks
