has anyone heard of the GYLC before? I just received a letter saying that I have been nominated to go to the GYLC conference but I have never heard of it before? I am wondering if it's just a scam or if anyone here has been to it before or knows about it... it sounds like an amazing opportunity but I'm not sure if it's a scam.. if you have any information on this conference or know what it actually is please reply!

one word BS

i got one too and did some research on it, it's definately not a scam as a matter of fact there's old threads on this site where ppl say it was amazing

i don't know if im gonna do it yet, cause im a senior right now so it wouldn't necessarily help me on apps but i may do it just to meet some new ppl from all over the world

its an amazing program, i would DEFINITELY recommend it to anyone. the one in NY is awesome, the one in europe is better. do it.

yeah, i've been nominated as well, and i was also wondering about whether it is a good program or not. looking at the above posts, I guess I definitely will go if I am accepted! :)

accepted lol? If you can come up with the money, you're accepted. ;)

The leadership conferences are OK, most people have a really good time at them, but one thing to consider is that more than likely your school participates in diversity conferences during the school year that are essentially the same thing but free for students (the school pays for them).

All these things are fun and can be enlightening, but they carry very little weight in college admissions.

Any CYLC camp is great for meeting interesting people, having fun, experiencing politics, and getting introduced to the diversity of America. But yeah, it is not exactly an intense academic experience

i think im probably gonna go, so far the vibe i am getting is that it is more of a vacation than two weeks of school in the summer

and i dont really care about college apps since at that point i will have been already accepted (im a senior right now) and i am from canada where they don't care about ec's.

is the female population attractive at these events? lol :)

If you can afford it, go ahead. Will not help on college applications, but it seems like an awesome experience.

I got nomintated for that this year, but I'm going to 'People to People'(medicine @ JHU) instead.

why does it not have any weight on college apps? doesn it seem impressive enough taht one gets nominated and actually represents his/her country in an international-scale event?

Um, anyone can get nominated for those conference things. They are also a ridiculous amount of money.

yea i don't see how like, 2 weeks can justify spending thousands

It is no scam; as people have said, supposedly it is a fun experience. But don't let their letter fool you into thinking that it is "selective."

Do it because it's fun, not because it's selective. Man, college is getting to us.

...i actually tore it up.

waste of money.

yeah I got one from NYLC and another one. Its costs like 1500+ for like one week at places like these. Just wondering is it really worth paying that much money for. I can find like local ones for like much cheaper. Are these actually fun. I'd rather learn something from them than just have fun and waste money. Does anyone know if the harvard and maybe Yale summer programs are good or not.

no these are scams

they are not scams but they ARE utterly pointless and have nothing to do with leadership. they come from your PSAT scores, and TONS of people get them. don't waste your money or time.

bump

has anyone decided to go?
