has anyone heard of this? i recently got a letter that says that i am chosen b/c i am a distinguished scholar and i should participate in this program which will be hold in washington DC or Vienna
any comments?
personally, i think this may be a scam

I went to National Young Leaders Conference, which is run by the same people who do GYLC. I don't know what GYLC is like, but the one I went to was great. It's a lot of money and it won't give you any college admissions boost, but I loved it and I wouldn't call it a scam.

I am going to go to NYLC this spring too...I would recommend going to the website, I think it's cylc.org, and there's information on the GYLC as well.

o i got that letter also ( the one with the golden emblem on top ).. it seems cool i think im gong cuz the school is offereing to pay for the whole thing to the ny dc one.. why wont it give a boost to college addmissions? wont it look really good i mean leadership and all tht!! id think it would look great!

Your school is offering to pay your way for you? Where the heck do you go?

Many people, including myself, consider these "leadership conferences" to be a scam. For one, the "nomination" business is a joke. For example, my sister was "nominated by her teachers" for NYLC, and - coincidentally enough - they mispelled her name just as she had done on the PSATs!

Also, the programs are quite expensive (several thousand, IIRC) -- so no college is going to look favorably on a program that is so exclusive.

Finally, it's completely bogus how they list all of the government sponsors... with such a long list, it's obvious that the sponsorship role is purely cerimonial.

My 2 cents...

raven001 agreed.
gg

well i wouldnt have went if i had to pay the whole 2+ grant i dnt think its worth tht much, im going to film summer program at tisch and its so much longer and more interesting and just slightly more expensive... but my school is paying for only one prsn to go since it is owned by the presidents daughter and they "support" all this stuff very strongly.. they also payed for our delegation to go to THIMUN and for all the teams to travel abroad on sporting events...it all seems soo nice of them at first until u start considerinmg how much money we actually pay in tuition each year and hoiw since she is the prezes daughter she basically has enuf connections to get us free tickets and hotel vautures ( we always stay in the 4 seasons....woop woop i dont even stay their when we travel as a family) allll the timmeee when we travel as a school...but i suppose im not complaining .... besides i dotn agree with u guys i dont think it would hurt ur apps, leadership is always appreciated highly by them ppl. and i know tht it seems like a scam and all tht but iv heard it was FUN... u know not everything u do has go towards the whole college acceptance thingie... for gods sake its suummmeeerrr and i think a lotta ppl on the cc forget to relax and focus to much on college wants this colleges like tht.. well neiways...

elodie...how do you know you are going to the tisch program? they haven't told anyone who got in yet...just wondering...

lol well I MEANt.. tht hopefully hopefully hopefully ill be going to tisch.. did u apply? seems really really cool doesnt it.. they say it improves ur chances of getting intio tisch from 10% to 60%.. but either ways itll b great ( if and when i HOPEFULLY get in)

I actually went last summer...and yes it does increase your chances but from 5% (normal rate) to around 30-40%...the summer program takes about 5-7%...(50 spots, my year 800 applied)..good luck and make your essays good! (there basically the most important thing to Rick, who does the admission process...

to raven001: The NYLC accepts people because of real nominations...I know personally exactly who nominated me, and she had nominated others before me from my school, who I know and had only positive things to say about the experience. Don't jump to conclusions, because while many are scams, they aren't all.

you went to THIMUN this time :D? What delegation did you represent, and in what committee? Wow CC people are everywhere :O :P

I went to NYLC last summer. I was skeptical but my mom really wanted me to go, so I did. It was good, but given the chance to go again I would definitely save the money for college tuition instead.

yep all those things are scams. don't do them. save your money for better stuff.
