Global Young Leaders Conference

has anyone heard of this? i recently got a letter that says that i am chosen b/c i am a distinguished scholar and i should participate in this program which will be hold in washington DC or Vienna
any comments?
personally, i think this may be a scam

Although the name is a little "big". Here is a link. I know a girl that attended and she seemed to like it. http://www.cylc.org/gylc/

i got one of those too.
is it worthwhile then? is this something that colleges would like to see?

It probably won't have much of an impact, as ability to pay dictates who can go more than anything else. It may be a nice experience just to go, however.

I have no idea if it helps you get into college or not, but I went to GYLC Vienna, Budapest, and Prague last summer and it was a lot of fun. It's pretty cool if you're interested in foreign relations and stuff, and if you aren't, there are plenty of chances to shop and sightsee. I've kept in contact with the people in my group, so it's kind of a neat thing to do. If you can afford it, do it!

Last summer I attended the N(ational)YLC organized by the same people who do GYLC. I was skeptical at first, but my mom really wanted me to go. It turned out to be a good experience.

I agree with the others that it probably won't be much of a plus on most college apps (other than to show you did something besides watch tv and play video games over the summer), but I had a blast and met a lot of really cool people from around the country. I still correspond with many of them via email and IM...

If you have the money and the time, I say go for it; the people at CYLC put together a really stellar trip. Given the chance to go again, though, I'd probably save my money toward the college tuition expenses ahead.

How many Thousands does it cost? I would not do it for the college apps., because you would just come off as a priveleged kid. But as the others said, if you have a personal interest, go for it. It is a non-competitive program btw

Hi! I'm going to GYLC this summer. Two people I know have gone in the past, and said it was a great experience. It sounds a lot like Model UN, but even if it is, like everyone said up there, it'll be awesome to meet people from all over.

chocoholic, the cost is pretty steep. It's about 3000 USD.

And as far as I know, the only way to get a letter from GYLC is to be recommended by a teacher. Kind of like People to People.

Last year, it was $4,700 I believe. With spending money and transportation to whichever airport they fly you out of, it was over $5,000. This was the Europe trip, but I think the one in Washington is a bit cheaper.

hell no! i am out!!! 3k USD??? hell, i am not going, i'd rather save money for summer school!!!

i got a letter that said i was nominated. quite a few people i know got this same thing - we think its like a $ scam but some people went to one of these conferences last year and they liked it.

i'd rather use the money and go on spring break haha

It was fun. I got to go to New York while the convention was going on, and I mooched off of my delegates and go to actually go to the RNC. It was crazy.

There's a lot of great speakers, too.

I enjoyed it. Go for it.

Geniusriki: Could you comment more of your experience at GYLC? I went to NYLC and got nominated to go to GYLC. But the deadline is fast approaching and I don't have a lot of information, so anymore that you could offer would be great (ie housing, daily activities, people, etc.)

I think I responded in your other post, but I'll respond here too. In Vienna, I stayed at the Hotel Schonbrunn, which used to be the guest house to the summer (?) palace. All the hotels you stay at are fairly nice, but this one was especially cool because it was historical and pretty. Budapest was by far the best city. Everything in Hungary is so cheap, so the shopping is great, and the cruise on the Danube is a cool way to spend an afternoon. Prague was fun too, but cold, and the hotel was in a sketchy area.
Technically, you aren't allowed to drink (and some people got kicked out for doing it) but a lot of people did it, and no one would know if you ordered something at a bar during your free time, so as an American, that was kinda neat.
There are a lot of speakers. Some were boring, some were really interesting and I guess that all depends on your interests. A lot of emphasis was placed on the expansion of the EU and the use of the Euro.
As far as daily activities go, the 400 people there are split up into groups of about 25 and assigned a country. You then attend meetings with these people in Leadership Group Meeting (LGMs) a few times a day. Everyone gets to be really good friends with the people in their LGM. Basically, it's similar to a model UN type thing, where you are faced with a problem and you present a solution that would be in your country's best interest. There is a global summit at the end of the 2 weeks where you present what your country has decided. I was in India (randomly assigned)..
Oh and I saw Mauthausen concentration camp, which was something that I will definitely never forget.
In short, it's a fun program, I learned a lot, saw a lot, and I met a really awesome group of people. I definitely recommend it.

8 ppl from my school (I am in India) got the letter as well... I think it is a kind of mass mailin stuff where they just send out 1000s of these letters
