Globe on "redefining acceptance at Harvard"

He’s redefining acceptance at Harvard - The Boston Globe

On William Fitzsimmons, who ended up at Harvard despite working class background and now leads admissions and financial aid, and aims to expand access to Harvard through recruitment and financial support.

Haha, I kind of love that particular quote. :P

Thanks compmom, an interesting read :)

I like the way he himself spent a good deal of his first try at 9th grade in the woods with friends, skipping 55 out of 180 school days. Also that he asked an applicant, whose parent was a little intense, what he did “for fun.” And also that he says working at McDonald’s can teach as much as “exotic” or “impressive” summer programs. Interesting guy. “Today 63% of Harvard students receive scholarship assistance” and those whose family income is less than $60,000 essentially go for free.

Rich snobs? Sounds like the nuns had been reading CC.

Somehow this feels like a prelude to his retirement. Very nice read.
