GMAT not required

A relative of mine is taking online MBA courses through Webster University. I read that Webster does not require the GMAT and they are accredited through the Higher Learning Commission. It is also AACSB Member Non-Accredited. What exactly does this mean? Does this hurt the reputation of the school?

Yes, it hurts the rep. This may not matter if your relative just needs an the degree. If you want to propel your career, I think there are 5 tiers to consider when looking at an MBA in the US (just my opinion):

1) Top Tier: the top 15-20 ranked (all AACSB)
2) Second Tier: 20-50 ranked (all AACSB)
3) Third Tier: A really good regional school with local alumni connections (I’d guess all AACSB)
4) Fourth Tier: All other AACSB schools
5) Fifth Tier: Non AACSB schools

Also, stay clear of u-Phoenix:

If you are in PA and are looking for a great internet MBA, check out SMEAL (Penn State). they have a great (top 50) MBA program they offer over the net. Again, all of this is my opinion only.

I work for a company in Ohio, so I may be looking at Akron or Youngstown. Most likely Akron. However, they don’t offer much in the way of online courses. I would prefer to take some courses online and not have to be bothered with going to a campus for every course. I don’t plan on pursuing a MBA for several more years. I want to stay on my current engineering track right now but I may want to get into supply chain and logistics in the future.

Personally, I wouldn’t do an online course. I am taking evening classes and feel that the connections you make with your classmates is just as important as what you are being taught. Additionally, I would make sure that if you go part time that you get access to the career assistance programs offered by the schools. Some schools only offer that help to full time students. If you go to Akron, it might be worth looking at Cleveland state. Else, I would wait until you are closer to a good school. Or, if you want to take classes, get an MS in your engineering discipline with plans on getting an MBA down the road. MS+MBA>BS+MBA
