GMS - Not eligible for Pell Grant?

Is it worth applying to the Gates Millennium Scholarship if I know I am not eligible for a pell grant? I entered my family's financial information into the FASFAcaster and my EFC is way too high to be considered for it.....

No

No

Nope.

@paintsplatterla What is your EFC? What is your parents’ AGI?

@Madison85 efc is around $30k according to the fsafacaster using tax returns from 2013, AGI is $130k according to last year as well.
the AGI probably went up for 2014 due to my father putting in more hours at work (paid hourly).

With $130,000 in AGI, you will not be Pell eligible at all…and also would not be eligible for the Gates scholarship…which is for low income students.

$130,000 a year income is not low income.

Do you happen to know of any scholarships that don’t take into account of financial need?

The best merit awards that do not take need into consideration are offered directly by the colleges. Did you apply to any schools where you have a good chance of getting merit aid?

Yes, it’s my safety school in my hometown. I don’t really want to go to school here but will if I can’t afford my other safety which I am unsure of the aid due to its size (UTexas-Austin).

Merit aid does not take into account income. That’s it. I hope you’re in-state for TX to make UT affordable.

What are your stats? GPA, ACT, SAT?

GPA - 3.6 unweighted, 4.3 weighted
ACT - highest composite 33, highest superscore - 34 (~33.75)
First gen, 8/229, okish/good ECs, volunteers hours

@"Erin’s Dad"‌ yes I do live in TX, I think I will get the 10% scholarship there ($2k) but of course I’d like to find some extra to cover the rest…

Are you a junior?

@paintsplatterla

Senior

Are you an URM?

How much can your parents afford to pay each year for four years?

What is your intended major?

Where have you applied?

Asian female, my parents are able to afford 20-25k, intended major is Bio or neuroscience, I’ve applied to tufts, rice, Boston U, Cornell U, UT-Austin, UT Arlington

Last year the Top 10% scholarship was not fully funded by the legislature. I believe the award dropped to $600 and requires you to have financial need. Just something to check on. I haven’t heard what it pays this year. UT Austin is not known for offering much merit aid. UT Dallas offers much more merit aid.

Paints…you say yoir parents can afford $20,000 to $25,000. What do the net price calculators give as estimated net costs? The schools will compute a family contribution based on the financial information your family provides…not on what they say they can afford.

And sometimes there is a huge difference.

In addition, some of the schools on your list do not guarantee to meet full need for all.

NPCs say that my EFC is ~30k. That being said, it is a (relatively) small stretch to meet that 5k to 10k difference. I think when I get all the decisions back in April, I will compare FA packages and see which one is the most realistic.
