Great game last night, although there seemed to be more Maine fans there than BC fans. BC will be playing Air Force Saturday night in Worcester. They also have Minnesota-Duluth and Maine in the same bracket. Go Eagles!

Dear bluebayou : Had the chance to see the full game on the new NBC Sports Network while also getting remote reports from the TD Bank Garden. BC certainly deflated Maine in the first period going up 2-0 and if not for the Maine goalie, it might have been 4-0. Maine absolutely had the better of the play in the second, closing the gap to 2-1 on some well rewarded play. Boston College’s third goal was a back breaker just before the end of the second. Trading body blows in the third with tighter officiating led to some additional chances for both sides with nothing converted aside from the BC open netter in the final minute.

Now on the crowd, when Maine scored, you could certainly hear a larger cheer on the television than with the BC goals. That was confirmed from my daughter at the game who claimed that the crowd of about 12,000 (seems high) was more than half fans with Maine jerseys. As she said, when you think about it, this is Maine’s chance on the national stage which just does not happen that often - the school, students, and alumni did well to support Maine in this Hockey East final.

Walking around Boston prior to the game, Maine jerseys mixed in well with the St. Patrick’s Day preferred garb of the day. I was surrounded by Maine fans at the game and they are loud. Maine hockey travels well and the Boston area is really a short drive for them. I did feel like I could finally breathe when that last empty net goal was scored. It was nice to see the Mainers making a quick exit at that point. I didn’t know until this morning that the leading scorer for Maine (and the nation) was injured in Friday night’s contest against BU and did not play.
scottj - By any chance did they show the sled race on tv during the third period? Two of the guys who dress up in those yellow one piece head to toe suits were racing around the rink in sleds. It was hilarious. Think Jim Carey-like movements.
So happy that BC won and really hope they do not face Maine again. Jerry York does an amazing coaching job every year.

Dear Dogwood : Here in New York, we knew about Maine’s leading player who was knocked out of the game - hard hit in the third period the night before with Boston University.

Unfortunately, we did not see the sled race.

In closing, I think Jerry York was pleased to win - but I think that one more BC vs. BU game this season would have been the order of the day. As hockey lore has it, you can lose every game during the season … except for the Beanpot against BU. Would have been nice to see that matchup one more time.

There were definitely more Maine fans, but this can probably be attributed to, at least in terms of student fans, St. Patrick’s Day. Many BC students decided to celebrate last night instead of going to the game, which most probably thought we were guaranteed a win anyways. Either way, those of us at the game had a great time and look forward to the NCAA tourney coming up. 4 more wins!

Huh? (The serious celebration doesn’t start until after 10:00 pm anyway.) :D

scottj- I agree with you. I would have preferred playing BU.

bluebayou - We got into the city around 4 o’clock. The city was insane by that time. Remember - This is Boston. Every bar and restaurant was packed and had long lines waiting to get in. Many people had been partying since the morning. When we got to the game, I saw very few BC students in the crowd and I immediately thought that they would not be there due to the crazy conditions in the city, but once the game started, there was a great section of BC students who were loud and proud. Hopefully, they’ll make it out to Worcester for the bracket division.

Also, the only thing better than meeting BU in the Beanpot final is having BU eliminated by either Northeastern or Harvard the opening night :)
