Go far away to college or stay closer to home?

Hello, I'm a senior and have to make my decision soon. I was accepted to two pretty good schools, one three hours away and one about 45 minutes. Neither one is really that much better than the other. The closer one is a private school and located in the city, while the farther one is a state school and a suburb. I liked the farther ones campus but I feel the closer school would lead to better opportunities for employment, plus my boyfriend will be going there. I also have really bad anxiety so I'm not sure if going too far is a good idea. Any opinions? Or any advantages or disadvantages of going away vs staying closer to home? Thanks!

I recommend weighing your decision without factoring in your boyfriend. You can still see each other on weekends if you go to the school farther away. I dated a guy who went to a different college than me for 4 years, and we’re married now. So, try doing pros and cons minus boyfriend. Congrats on getting in 2 schools and best of luck!

Always go far away from home but this situation is different. As mentioned, you have anxiety which could be a problem. Will you be living in the dorms or commuting from home? If you live in dorms, close one is fine.

I will be living in the dorms if I go to the closer one. And I’ve weighed the pros and cons and it seems like the closer one should be my choice…but I don’t know. Something about the farther school just keeps drawing me back in.

“I will be living in the dorms if I go to the closer one.”

If the closer one is 45 min from home, its not close is it ? Its the less far one. 45 min is quite far so you will get the full college experience by living in dorms. What colleges are these ? Are they in the same academic level ?

Canisius college is the closer and suny oswego is the further one. I’m not sure which one is better academically…

Here are the pros and cons in my opinion for both…

Canisius:
Pros:
Better dorms
Closer to home and friends/boyfriend
Well respected with businesses in the city
It has a nicer library.
It has indoor tunnels which are good for the winter.

Cons:
It seems very small and cliquey-like.
The area surrounding the college is not the best.
It is more expensive.

SUNY Oswego:
Pros:
It’s cheaper.
The campus is very pretty.
I’ve heard it has good food
All the facilities seem very new.
The overall campus feel.

Cons:
It might be harder to get a job or internship going there.
It is farther from home.
It gets extremely cold during winter.
The social anxiety factor.
The campus was pretty big, maybe too big

Does it really look that much better graduating from a private school than a state school that is not very well known?

You are putting too much emphasis on your boyfriend and friends’ choice of school. Would that school still appeal if your boyfriend wasn’t there? On what basis do you believe SUNY Oswego would impair your ability to secure a job?

Yes the school would still appeal to me if my boyfriend wasn’t going there, it is a very good business school and has good connections with businesses in the buffalo area.
