This is the website of an ex-Marine who has lost his job recently due to the economy. He's planning to hike the Appalachian Trail beginning 7/1/09 and will interview people along the way. It should take several months, but he'll have updates on his website. Looks interesting and I thought some might want to follow his travels through the website and Twitter. Then he'll write a book about his experiences and the people he met along the way. You could even be a sponsor for just $1.00. He seems like a great guy.

The whole AT? Most through hikes begin in the spring…he’s gonna have to go fast!

No, he’s hiking southbound from Katahdin. The mountain is covered in snow and ice until June, and doesn’t open until mid-June, when most southbound hikes start. Most say a south-bound hike is harder than a north-bound, because you start in Maine, including the 100-mile wilderness, in the middle of black fly season…

The AT trail veterans, many of whom are purists, will not like him making a hike into a commercial venture. It will be interesting to see how he is received…

I have heard that southbound is definitely harder. Black flies aren’t so bad - they add protein to the diet ;)

The purists also might have a hard time with him Twittering on the trail.

Turns out that Joe’s plan was mostly “to get a buzz going about me in order to uniquely market myself in this rare severe economic downturn”… He is now exploring a couple of job offers, and appears to have put his hike plans on hold…
