So I have some questions...
I've been going to a csu but I absolutely hate it. My GPA is very low (2.5) so I can't really think about transferring at this point. So if I decide to go to a CC for a year, can I retake some of the classes that I didn't pass in? and get those credits to transfer to a UC? Do they average the grades?
Also, I only have 46 quarter units. So by the time I apply to a UC, I will have about 90 quarter units, so I will be a junior standing, right?
And will it increase my chance of getting accepted as a transfer from a CC than from a CSU?
(even if it was only a year at a cc?)

Well your GPA is very low for transferring, 2.40 GPA is the bare minimum to even apply to transfer to a UC. You can go to a California Community College and attend for a year there but you cannot retake courses you received a D or F in. The only way you can be able to repeat the course over again for a different grade is to take it at the CSU you are attending. Taking the same exact course at the CCC does not make a difference, they will not average them both out like some private colleges will do.

To answer the question about units and standing. Yes, 90 quarter units will give you junior standing only if those 90 units were all transferrable to which ever UC you wished to attend. As for increasing chances, yes it will increase your chances by priority even if you stayed at the cc for a year. But if you are thinking of obtaining a TAG (Transfer Admission Guarentee) agreement form to solidify an admissions guarentee to a certain UC, look over the requirements for your major depending on college. Most or all of the TAG forms will be ineligble for you because you have already attended a 4-year insitution.

That's not true, I signed tag with ucsd and I got in. I went to UCSB for a year before going to cc.

JetForcegeminix - thanks for clarification on the TAG portion. I misread the information, it's if you already have a degree at a 4-year institution then you are ineligble for TAG.

Only UCSB allows TAG with coursework from a 4 year institution. All the other UCs do not. (trust me if i could, i would've done it in a heartbeat)

yoona89 - which CSU are you attending?

i go to cal poly slo
does it matter which csu i went?
and for the posts above.. so if i can't get TAG, does it mean it will be hard for me to transfer?
i would like to even go to ucr......

Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG) 2009-2010

you can goto ucsd just finish those requirements.

I just wanted to know which CSU made your bad experience. I don't ever want transfer to a CSU, even if they paid me. The stuff I've seen when visiting CSU Pomona was already bad, don't really know how it is at SLO.

Well if you can't get TAG done and have already taken those prereqs at the CSU you currently attended. I would have to sadly say that there are really no other options but just apply. Personally I think that your 2.5 GPA is not even suitable to transfer to even UC Riverside but maybe UC Merced when they put into calculation what your UC transferrable GPA would be.

but i'm not done with all the prerequisites yet..
would i have a chance if i finish all the prerequisite at a CC and have 90 quarter units and trnasfer?
also, if i retake a course that i got a D in, and say i get an A at the CSU i'm attending,
does the grade count as an A when i transfer?

yoona89 - Well that's somewhat good that you didn't finish the prereqs. This gives you a chance to go ahead and try to fulfill the TAG forms for which ever school you want to apply. It also depends what sort of grade you received for the prereq, some UC's will not accept a repeat of a prereq course (I've seen this at UCLA for Business Econcomics). But repeating a course to remake the D or F grade that is not a prereq is always alright. You would kind of have a chance if you do attend a CC, only if you take the minimum amount of units that will qualify you as a CC student for transfer priority (excluding winter and summer sessions).

As for retaking a course hat you received a D in, if you received an A. Then your A would show up, not your D. If I remember correctly, there is a limited amount of retakes you can do. You also have to take that course you received a D or F in at the CSU, if you take it at a CC to replace the CSU grade, it will not be eligible.

Some clarification on this thread.

TAG: Although each UC campus will have their own rules on the TAG, you should still be eligible for the TAG with course work from a four year institution assuming you will not reach the Unit Limitation the UC campus has and you meet the UC's definition of a California Community Transfer student. Please check with each campus you are interested in signing a TAG agreement with to determine if you would be eligible.

"D/F" grade replacement: For Undergraduate Admissions purposes only, this means that graduate or professional level programs might work differently, the course does not have to be the exact same course at the same institution to replace a previous failed grade; unless the failed course was completed at a UC campus. For all other institutions, i.e. CSU and CCC, a comparable course (similar title and description) can be used to replace the grade and I would recommend using the Assist site to determine the best course. Please see University of California - Counselors for more information.

thank you so much for your reply.
but i have one more question.. so if i retake a course, the failed units don't count towards UC transferable units, right?

We would not be able to issue the units twice for the same course. This would be duplication of credit which isn't allowed.

So wait.

I am thinking of transferring to a UC from a CSU. I am wondering if you can go back to a CC, then apply later as a CC student? Or does the fact that I went to a CSU make me a transfer from another university?

Thanawalt:
I went to CSUN (Northridge) for my first semester and decided that I really want to go to a UC. However it is very difficult to go from a CSU to a UC directly (due to mainly that you are already at a 4 year university). What I did was I transferred to a CC and finished up the remaining year and a half (Im in in my last semester as we speak) and then transfer to a UC. My units carried over (I got 3 A's and 1 C) from CSUN to the CC and am currently waiting on acceptance updates as a transfer from the CC, not CSUN. Did that answer your question?

Yeah, that did answer it. Although I'm wondering if the application made you specify where you're transferring from. Was there a box you checked with CC as an option or something?

It asked what was the current college I am attending and list the colleges you have attended in the past. Yea there was a checkbox for the current college your attending.

I talked to a UCLA admissions advisor today. She said the last 30 units must be from a community college to be a CC student in your transfer application. Just thought I'd let others know.
