Go to Duke for 2000$!?!?!?!

<p>Ok....so i'm a little confused about college costs. I check collegeboard.com and it says that Duke is 30,000 but then it says average financial aid received is 28,000. What is with this stat? I am sure the average person doesnt pay 2000 a year. Help please!</p>

<p>A couple things:</p>

<ol>
<li>Duke is closer to $40,000 than $30,000 once room/board/etc are factored in.</li>
<li>While the average person who receives aid gets $21,000 in grants (the other $7,000 is merit based, mostly athletic scholarships), that page doesn't say how many people get aid. It might be something like 50%, or it might be a lot lower.</li>

<p>Yeah, actually the Chronicle said that 60% of Duke students have no financial aid.</p>

<p>So would it be correct to say that 40 percent of people that go to Duke get 21,000 in financial aid?...That sounds pretty munificient to me...ahh(that word was on the sat last saturday)</p>

<p>39% of graduating class of 2003 got financial aid. </p>

<p>42% of freshmen were determined to have financial need
Average financial aid package for them was $25,828.
Average need-based scholarships or grants was $22,831.
Average self-help aid (e.g. work study or loans) was $4,663.
Average need-based loan was $3,613.</p>

<p>13% of freshmen recieved a merit award.
Average merit scholarship was $7,033.</p>

<p>4% of freshmen received an athletic scholarship.
Average athletic scholarship was $24,938.</p>
