so basically, I went to community college for a year and then transferred to a state university. My sister was going to help me pay the 1,000 dollars that I needed to attend said school, but I had a falling out with my family at the end of the semester and ended up having to stay with a friend and had to stop attending since my college was like 50 miles from my house. Honestly, it took me ages to get my life back on track, and it’s not one of my proudest moments. I ended up ignoring all the emails that I got from the school and they ended up taking away all of my financial aid including FAFSA since they figured I didn’t finish 60% of the term because I never got a teacher to let them know the last time I attended classes, even though I did. This all has been pushed aside for like two years and now I owe 10,000 dollars. I’m just trying to figure out my options at this point because I really want to finish my education, but I owe so much money now. Looking for a little advice if you’ve been in the same situation.
^Your one and only option: Pay off the debt before you go back to school. Get a job or a few jobs!
Agreed. A new school will not accept you until you’ve paid off the debt from your former school.
Your comment about the teacher makes it sound like there is some issue of when and if you officially withdrew. Did you officially withdraw or did you just stop going? You might want to see if that university has an ombudsman who can go over the official policies with you. Is it student aid money that must be paid back given that you ended up not attending the school? I agree that you need to repay the school.
You need to pay the bill. School number one will not release your transcript until you do…and school number 2 will require that transcript from you as a transfer.
You don’t owe $10,000 on a $1000 debt. What else do you owe beside that $1000 plus interest? Is the school requiring that you pay back need based aid you received?
You need to contact the school 1 ASAP, and work this out ASAP.
And lesson learned…NEVER ignore emails like this. You would have been able to work something out with the school if you had addressed this ASAP.
