Going for the degree: undergrad or 3-2/4-2?

Can anyone help me weigh the pros and cons between getting an undergraduate engineering degree versus going with a 3-2 or 3-2 program at an LAC? I'm choosing between Bowdoin and Smith for school this fall. The former has a 4-2 affiliation with Columbia SEAS, among other schools; the latter a BS in engineering. If this matters: I want to go into consulting.

Also, does anyone know if the pre-engineering guidelines for Columbia's 3-2/4-2 BA/BS Combined Plan (the aforementioned affiliation) hold for its 4-2 BA/MS program? There's a paragraph about it somewhere on Columbia's website, but it's otherwise not very clear.

Thanks. Do those requirements hold for those interested in the BA/MS (as opposed to BA/BA) plan as well?
