Hey so I went to a UC for 4 quarters with a 4.0 GPA but have now decided that it is not the place for me. Too big, too impersonal, too inexpensive, bad location, basically just not right for me. I want to transfer to a CSU, but don’t know the feasibility of this. I know since I missed the filing deadline in the fall I’ll have to wait until next October to apply.
So in the meantime (for 3 semesters) I plan to attend a local CC and finish up whatever GE and major requirements I can.
My main question is about unit totals.
At the UC, I completed 61 quarter units (about 40.6 semester units.) That means I still need nearly 20 semester units to meet their 60 unit requirement. However, I heard somewhere that they don’t count summer classes towards that 60-unit-requirement. Does that mean I must take 20 units this semester at the CC to avoid not even being considered in the application? That’s crazy! I work part time, so I can’t do such a huge unit load, and I think that my CC doesn’t even let you take more than 19 units a semester anyways. But I don’t want to delay applying for a whole other year just because I’m short a few units.
Say I take 15 units this semester. That puts my total up to 55 units. And like I said, I have a good GPA, and I’ve also completed the Golden 4 for CSU. Will they not even look at my application?
I’d still be enrolled at the CC in Fall 2018, so counting completed and in-progress units together I’d have well over the 60 unit requirement, closer to 70 in fact.
Any help on this /advice in general with this rather unconventional and opposite step of transferring from CSU to UC would be greatly appreciated.
I already know I’m going to take 5 years to graduate, I just don’t want to make it more than that because of a stupid 60 unit rule.
https://www2.calstate.edu/apply/transfer/Pages/upper-division-transfer.aspx says nothing about summer sessions. Ask directly if you are not able to get an answer from the web site. Note that if you do not have 60 semester units by the time of transfer, you would be considered a lower division transfer, but there are fewer transfer opportunities for lower division transfers.
But hmm, interesting, that first link said you just need the 60 units completed “by the time you enter a CSU”. Which I would for sure have 60 by the time I “enter” the CSU, which would be Fall 2019. I just am not sure if they mean you need the 60 by the time you apply.
I will definitely contact the school, but haven’t had much success in getting good responses from them so far. We’ll see. Thanks again
You do not need 60 by the time you apply, but you do need to indicate that you will complete 60 by the time you enter through listing in-progress and planned course work (but check whether the last summer before the fall semester that you enter can count). Note that an admission offer will be conditional on actually completing the listed planned or in-progress courses with satisfactory grades.
