Going Greek?

I have recently been accepted to Georgia Tech and am in the process of deciding between schools. I have heard rumors about how everyone at Tech is nerdy (onlyattech.com) and how if you are NOT in the Greek system it is hard to have a fun social life.

I was wondering how true these rumors are and if being a sorority helps--if the ONLY way you can have a good social life is by going greek?

Also, how many Greeks are engineering majors? I've heard that its way too hard to balance engineering work with sorority/fraternity events...

Thoughts?!

thanksss :)

No, it’s not at all true that your have to be greek to have a social life. Being greek is very popular, and it is extremely easy to meet people that way, but there are still a lot of other ways to have fun. Considering a majority of the student body as a whole is majoring in an engineering-related field of some sort, the same can be said of the greek population. Being in a fraternity or sorority is a big commitment, especially leading up to initiation. There are certainly social “obligations” that you must balance with your school work but it can be done, and a great many people successfully do so.

And no, not everyone at Tech is nerdy. The stuff on OnlyAtTech is on there because it stands out. But nearly everyone at Tech is also smart, and also studying some sort of science-related field, so you have to be okay with being around slightly “nerdy” people. It doesn’t however mean they necessarily have to be your best friends. The beauty of college is that there are always people with similar interests that you can hang out with.
