Going greek?

If you are thinking about going greek or are, feel free to ask questions.

I want to rush this fall. How intense is pledging?

it depends on the fraternity. however, most of it is mental, if you can deal with it mentally then it won’t be a problem. Just make sure you stay on your academics while being committed to the fraternity.

I read everywhere that going greek can be spectacular for future networking but it is really difficult to decide if one wants to go greek or not. From my understanding I think rushing starts nearly the first week of school. I guess most decide while pledging if greek is for them or not.

It is great for networking, and it it depends on the school when rush starts, some schools have formal rush the first week of school whereas other schools have it the first week of the second semester. I think everyone should give greek life a chance and if you find a great group of friends it is worth it.

My rushing will be the first week of fall semester, I’m just nervous that I won’t get into the one that I am primarily interested in currently. Then again, I’ve only been in 2 of the 5, so I can’t really judge them all, but the ones house is pretty cool, of course I’m not picking it based on the house. Nor do I know where the question is in my post.

no need for a question, just glad there is one more person interested in going greek. do make sure to try and get to know nearly all the groups, because you dont want to put all your eggs in one basket and you dont know what you might miss by ignoring other fraternities.

But, out of curiosity, of the fraternities you know, how many would you say that you know for a fact physically haze excessively.

Very ture.

Of course, I totally plan to check them all out.

Also, what sort of events do Fraternities typically hold for like pre-bid getting to meet them events >.> Whatever you call it.

At my university I read that the events are more like social settings and presentations. Perhaps I’ve read wrong but greek organizations will introduce themselves to prospective candidates.

Some of the pledging things are just degrading but some are just incredibly effective at bringing people together

Here is some interesting facts I’ve found on The University of Iowa website:
Fraternity members constitute 2% of the population in the United States, yet they make up:
· 80% of the top executives in Fortune 500
· 71% of the men listed in Who’s Who in America
· 76% of the current US Senators and Congressmen
· 43 out of 50 CEO’s of the largest corporations
· 40 of the 47 Supreme Court Justices since 1910
· 100 of the 158 cabinet members since 1900
· All but 3 United States Presidents since 1825
· All but 2 United States Vice Presidents since 1825
· Higher GPA and greater graduation rate than the all male average across America.
I was suprised to find these facts myself. Many high officals seem to have been in a fraternity themself.

my friend at michigan told me about something one of his friends had to do as a pledge, and it was basically all the pledges were locked in the basement with a very large amount of alcohol and were locked in there until they finished it.
i want to pledge this year as a freshmen, especially since 75% of my college is in a fraternity, but some things about it i dont like. i dont wanna pledge if theres stupid stuff pledges have to do, and by that i mean extreme stuff like i mentioned.

Wow, drinking the alcohol is extreme. Though when I notice the numbers above, and all the outstanding top officals that were in a fraternity it is something that should be considered. The numbers are actually astonishing I think.

I guess that my primary concern is that I am shy at first; therefore, I am concerned that it will not be enough time for the people to truly get to know me.

What I’m worried about is waiting for the bids. If I get a bid they are going to want me to sign right there right? I want to keep my options open and see if I get the bid to my dream fraternity.

What is your dream fraternity? Are there like very elite/ presitigous fraternities out there or is it all preference by ones university?

I don’t want to say on here. I like the brothers of the fraternity so it’s more of a school thing than on a global scale (the name is well known nationally now that I think about it).

i’ve also heard of pledges having to do a elephant walk. if you dont know what that is look it up on urban dictionary cuz i prob shouldnt explain it here. this story may or may not be true.
another friend of mine said they did some thing where they basically dumped alcohol on the pledges while they were in a small area. i dont know how but my friend claims he was drunk afterwards because of it
