I went to a 4-year college for two semesters… and proceeded to mess up badly. In my 18 months there, I earned a grand total of 9 credits and “earned” a sub-2.0 GPA. It’s been 6 years since that time. Is it possible to apply to schools without reporting my existing college record at all (of course, I’m willing to give up those 9 credits)?
My high school record was mediocre – ~75 average w/ 1400 SAT score from 1999. Any hope, or do I have to drag along that inauspicious start wherever I decide to apply?

colleges ask if you have ever enrolled somewhere else. I'm not a lawyer but here's my understanding -- if you decide to "forget" about it and the school finds out they can kick you out for lying to them; if they find out after you graduate they can even revoke your diploma. Not only that, but if you get any financial aid then you have committed fraud and if government money is involved in any way its not just a civil case, its criminal law. Don't underestimate how many people you know (friends, friends of friends, etc) who might be surprised to run into you living in a frosh dorm or who would congratulate you on turning your life around after the disaster at X in front of people who believe you're just starting college.

You're better off explaining to colleges why now you'll be a different person in college, and perhaps taking some classes at a local CC to prove its true.
