To give a quick background I’m starting college the beginning of September and I’m going into Business Admin. All this time I picture myself as this business guy but in reality I don’t think it’s going to work for me. I feel like too many people enter the business field looking to one day be a white collar man/woman who want to work for themselves and drive the nice car with a huge house. American dream right? Well I’m hitting reality and barely even took many business based classes in high school. Nor did I even take high school all too seriously. I slacked off, partied, didn’t do homework and just swept by. Senior year I got my act together and stopped doing it all as much and managed to get myself all As and Bs. School really wasn’t too hard I just never applied myself to what I was capable of doing. I was lazy and I’m looking to get myself together knowing I’m going to be working hard for the rest of my life. One thing I want to know is what I actually want to pursue. I could get out of my major this week and change up my schedule but need to make a decision. I’m going to a community college to save money and since I don’t know what I’m doing why go to a college thats 5x more financially when I’d be taking my General Eds anyway. I can’t make my mind up because I’m really just going after the money. I want to have a well paying job and really don’t want to settle for the Average Joe lifestyle. Like a lot of people I wanted to start a business and work for myself but once again back to reality. Some classes I did enjoy learning about were Chemisty (a lot although it was basic Chem I had the best teacher and always had an A in the class) it fascinated me so much dealing with chemicals and how they react together, I looked forward to going to his class. I was always good at Math but defiantly can get better at it. Never got to the Calculas or Trig classes but I’m sure I could learn and I liked learning about Science a little depending on what it was about. History, just scratch that its all about the future. Econ and Soc was enjoyable too. I appreciate it you read this whole thing. I’m just looking for advice and some people with experience that know better. I went to a high school where most kids don’t care and just are looking to get by thinking its all an easy ride but I’m well aware its not, just would be a lot better knowing what I’m going after.
Since you are going to community college, you can wait on selecting a major until later and just take your general education classes first. You also don’t have to decide what you want to do with the rest of your life right now - you could major in chemistry and still start a business later, if you want to. Major in what’s interesting to you.
Thanks for the advice. I think I’m going to drop the business admin and just worry about my gen eds until I find out what I really want to get into.
I’m at a CC right now and I’m taking my Gen Eds as well since I’m still pondering on what I want to do with my life. I think I might want to do something with Economics.
My advice would be to take your gen eds and discover on what you like. Also, pick a major that has decent job prospects. For example, I wouldn’t suggest majoring in Psychology unless if you were going to grad school, med school, law school, etc.
Major in what you like but also keep in mind that some majors have better job prospects than others.
