I went to visit New York and fordham about a month ago, I wasn't on fordham for long but i talked to one student, a sophomore who says he rarely goes into manhattan and that he spends like 98 percent of his weekend nights either on campus or at the tribar on Arthur avenue. Maybe it was because of the expenses but I wanted to know of this is usual? Personally I really want to spend a lot of time in manhattan. Don't get me wrong i want to participate in campus activities but I want to take advantage of the awesome city just a subway ride away. I'm kind of looking for the balance between a good and active campus life while also taking advantage of New York City (not just Arthur avenue). Any comments from current or former RHA students on how much time you and your friends spent in the city? Thanks.

It’s perfectly accessible and affordable if you want to go into Manhattan frequently. A day trip shouldn’t be more than $5 on the subway, or $6 if you take the Ram Van. I think most students just choose not to. The only problem you might encounter is finding people to go with you every weekend.

yeah paramitas thats my concern, i don’t mind paying five bucks i was just wondering if you or anyone else with experience would think it’d be hard for me to just get a group of friends to hit the city with

It’s not a distance thing. Midtown is only about 10miles away. It’s a traveling back to the Bronx late at night thing. There’s some tough neighborhoods to navigate through. But if you can afford a cab it should be smooth going. Hint: the cabbie might want a double fare, depending on the driver. GL.

I don’t think it’d be hard. Just don’t expect to go with the same group every time, as I don’t think most people would want to go every week.

If your going back late, couldnt you use the ram van from Lincoln center?

Ram van is the way to go. You can get up early Saturday morning, take the Ram Van down to Lincoln Center, spend all day in Manhattan and then either take a van back or a cab. If you are with a group, you can take the D train.

Also, the metro north train stops at the campus. It is a short ride on the metro north to Grand Central Station and my D takes it when she is going to the east side of manhattan.

The Ram Van is a comfortable and convenient way to get to the Lincoln center area of the west side.

Fordham has a van waiting at the D train station at night so students who take the subway back to campus at night don’t have to walk back. The walk to the subway during the day is fine. The stretch of Fordham Road from the campus to the D train is a bustling commercial strip full of shoppers. Its an unappealing walk at night after the stores close, though, and then the van is available to drive students back to campus from the subway.

My D goes into Manhattan and Brooklyn frequently to visit museums, attend concerts, go thrift store shopping, etc. She has never felt the need to take a taxi as she has had no problem getting where she needed to go by either metro north, the ram van or the subway. She loves that she can spend time in manhattan and then come back to the beautiful, peaceful Rose Hill campus.

First of all, there is always a group of people going into the city, for a variety of reasons. MOST students take the Metro North, which goes to Grand Central Station, mid-town. Most students dont take D Train subway, because of the distance up Fordham Road, and the number of stops. Some students going to Columbia or places up town take the D train. I was unaware of a RamVan taking kids from the D train to campus, perhaps that is a new service. Bravo! Many take the RamVan into Lincoln Center. The RamVan is FREE to Rose Hill Students who have a class at Lincoln Center. My kid took 3 or 4 courses at Lincoln Center Junior and Senior year and enjoyed it, plus also had an internship Upper West Side Manhattan (in the 70’s…nice part of town). I believe the RamVan is free for internships as well if you have the proper documentation. If you are using the RamVan simply to get into Manhattan/Lincoln Center/Central Park area, then there is a charge.

Probably the most frequent time to go into Manhattan during the week is Wednesday since for the vast majority of students there are no classes on Wednesday. The Metro North is perfectly safe if you do go alone, but you wont usually have to do that. Its not hard to take a roomie or another friend with you on an excursion to museums or the public library or window shopping etc.

If you travel alone its ALWAYS advisable to inform a few of your friends so they dont worry about you. I would never travel alone at night. Though I know kids do it, coming in from out of town etc.

I am a current student at RH. Most people do go into Manhattan on a fairly regular basis. Certainly some go in more than others. I find that I go in probably not every weekend, but I would guess that I go at least a few times a month. Some people go in more, others go in less. Things I do with friends have ranged from free (ex. Halloween parade in Greenwich Village, going to a taping of a show like The Daily Show, Colbert, or Fallon) to cheap (ex. Upright citizens brigade) to dinner or a first run movie or an occasional more expensive show (TKTS line) or concert as just a few ideas… I also spend time on campus and at Arthur Ave during weekends as well. I really like the mix of things available and consider it to be a big plus of Fordham RH.

I disagree with sovreigndebt and find that my friends and I rarely take Metro North into Manhattan. It is “nicer” but it is very limited in terms of where you get dropped off. If we are going somewhere right by Grand Central Station (which is rare) we have taken Metro North but if we go anywhere else in Manhattan or to another borough (also rare) it is more expensive and less convenient and we’d still have to take a subway once to our final destination. We typically take the subway. The RamVan is an option but again it is limited as to where you can get off so we usually only take it if we are going to a movie at Lincoln Center or doing something else in that area.

You can get a ten trip for Metro North. You get ten trips for the price of nine.
As for the D train, it’s great during the day. At night, as stated above, I wouldn’t do unless you are traveling with a large group. There is a car there at night to transport students to campus from the station.
I tell my D to take Metro North into Manhattan and then the subway to where she is going.
She hasn’t taken the Ram Van yet.

Hen4763, could you please elaborate on the van waiting at the D stop on Fordham Road? Do the students call ahead? Is it there all night (except for the few minutes needed for a round trip to drop off incoming students)? Is it there every night, or only on the weekend?

^^^There is always a van there at the subway stop at night. One van stays until the next van arrives. If you choose to take the van back to campus, any waiting is done inside of the van. I have taken the van or walked from the subway depending on the time of night, the weather, when the van expects to leave, how many people I’m with etc. It is a very good service.

As a life-long resident of NYC, I couldn’t imagine choosing FU and not making Manhattan a regular stomping ground. To my mind, it would be like attending BU and never exploring downtown Boston or going to Georgetown and never wandering around DC. Even more so, since the area directly surrounding Fordham is, to be kind, not the most shining example of what NYC has to offer. Once you get your sea legs, the subway is really the only way to travel. There are loads of apps now to help direct you…and honestly, some of the best surprises are often found when you get lost!

I used the subway. My kid used the subway. During the day. Metro North runs until 100am.

The RamVan runs later I think. RamVan is a very reliable and viable alternative. I am delighted to hear of the new service at the D Train. Its a LONG walk up Fordham Road in dangerous territory when late at night. NEVER GO ANYWHERE ALONE AT NIGHT, not even in Manhattan. I dont let my kids go walking around alone at home (far from NYC, believe you me)

The subway is fun and yes, you can explore the city and its boroughs. Part of the education you get at Fordham is the city scape and learning the streets. Independence and Freedom/Responsibility. Maturity.

Bottom line is New York is amazing…its very big and very exciting, but it IS the Big Apple. Public transport is convenient and easily accessible. We also often took cabs late at night…like past 1000pm, if we were out and about, shows, then dinner and drinks…etc. Amazing restaurants in New York…hundreds of them. Which serve late. Be smart, take a cab to Grand Central and take the Metro North. Especially if you have been drinking.

If you google Fordham off campus shuttle routes, you will get a link to the page on the website that describes the van that takes students from the D train to campus at night.

I’ll go to the city with you!

The Metro North train also runs until 100am. Its safe, clean and drops you directly at the gate on Fordham Road.

Its the primary mode for kids going into Mid Town Manhattan. The Ram Van also runs nearly 24/7 from Lincoln Center for a fee if you are using it as a taxi.

And of course the D train, subway that goes through Morningside Heights, Harlem and south Bronx. Its your choice.

My son is a Fordham junior and he is usually in Manhattan at least once a week. He always takes the subway, but takes the Ram Van back from the D train if they are coming back late at night. It’s very convenient - the Ram Van is always there.
