Is it common for people to join sports in college that they have had no prior experience with? I've played sports through all of high school but I want to try one or two new ones in college.

Yeah, it is pretty common.

Also, if anyone knows, what are a few sports where it is common for people to begin at college?

Like Manhattan said, rugby’s a popular one.

Ultimate frisbee is another popular one (a sport I can personally vouch for).

My team travels around the country competing against other schools (there is a tournament in Baton Rouge during Mardi Gras where we play saturday, drive to Bourbon St. saturday night to party it up, play on sunday and drive home).

We practice 2-3x a week, we workout together 2-3x a week, we have parties together, we hang out together, etc. It’s kinda like a frat in terms of how tightly knit everyone is, but with no hazing and dumb greek stuff.

Yeah I want to join one in part to make friends so that sounds good.
I’d like to mention that I’m a girl, isn’t rugby restricted to guys? Not stereotypically but I didn’t know there was girls rugby

Crew is another sport that people often start in college. Freshman/novice squads are usually quite large and almost all walk-ons!

In that case, be a rugby cheerleader. Ruggers are great.

there’s girls rugby

Yeah crew’s another big sport. They’re insane though.

Intramurals are a great way to try a sport you’ve never played. I’d never played any of these sports before college, but managed to win an intramural tourney in a few of them.

Broomball
Curling (I was bad, but it was a blast and now while watching the Olympics I can explain some of it to friends)
Ice hockey (had skated before, never played on any sort of team)
Racquetball
Ultimate Frisbee

I’ve done probably 15 different intramural sports, some every year. It’s fun, can play in a low-key environment, meet new people. I’m lucky that my school has a ton of intramural activities to offer though.

haha i wanted to do crew, but im only 5’3". nd im not sure if id like to be a coxswain

what in the heck is curling? lol.

any other suggestions for a not-very-athletic-or-coordinated-&-pretty-sedentary-thus-far girl? hehe.

Everyone loves broomball. Seems like something anyone could play.

Apparently you missed the last two weeks of Olympic coverage…it’s a sport played on ice, sliding “stones” (that always remind me of coffee pots) and try to get closer to the center of a target than your opponents. You can knock out their stones.

And broomball is awesome. Great sport.

no, i have heard of it. i just never bothered to look it up. & i don’t watch the olympics ;)

BUMP from almost 4 years later but I row now and am considering trying another sport that will keep me fit and be fun. What do yall suggest?

I used to do tennis in high school, but due to leaving the team on a rough slate, decided to change things up a bit.

I’m now thinking about trying swimming out. Not competitively, but recreational and intramural at most.
