Going out on a date vs dating someone

I recently found out that going out on a date with someone doesnt nessecarily mean they're boyfriends/girlfriend or that they're dating.

Can someone explain the difference betwen dating and going on a date? How about just hanging out together?

Going out on a date = just a date
Dating = going out on multiple dates, usually means they’re not boyfriend/boyfriend, boyfriend/girlfriend, nor girlfriend/girlfriend yet, but people sometimes using “dating” to mean that the two are in a relationship
Hanging out together = just friends… ?

Going out on a date can be compared to testing the waters. You spend some time together and get to know each other a little. If you do well, you can schedule another. “Dating” implies mutual exclusivity.

Date = Just a date.

The distinction I’ve never really understood is “dating” as opposed to “boyfriend/girlfriend”. Unlike princess, I thought dating was less mutually exclusive than bf/gf. Hmm…

Going on A date- Means going on just 1 date and thats it. You might never date again lol. You’re really still just friends or whatever at this point.
“Talking”-You’re talking/flirting about getting together.
Dating- Similar to saying “Were hanging out”. You’re spending a lot of time together but you haven’t made it official.
Boyfriend/Girlfriend-Its official and you both recognize it as so. You can now update your facebook status to in a relationship.

I’ve always seen dating, at least in todays world, as being less exclusive than being boyfriend/girlfriend. Back in the day it wasn’t so, but now it kinda is.

N/A .s.dfsdfsf

It means whatever the girl wants it to mean. You’ll learn this sooner or later.

So wait, dating isn’t the same as being boyfriend & girlfriend? So instead of telling people my girlfriend and I are dating, I’d ought go tell them we’re together, or something like that?

Going on a date=Going on a date.
Going on several dates, but not nessicarily exclusive=dating.
Dating exclusively=boyfriend/girlfriend or dating. Depending on the campus culture.

You could just say that she’s your girlfriend… that pretty much implies the dating and together thing.

Hah, good point. I usually do though…

w t f why can’t we just keep it simple and easy…

In my vocabulary, going out on a date is just a date-- no commitment, no obligation, just sort of getting to know that person in a romantic capacity. “Dating” would not necessarily mean exclusivity,it just means that it is someone you are “seeing” regularly but may not be serious with yet. “We’re dating” sounds way too casual to me for someone that you are in a serious relationship with.
