Going to a community college then transfering to art school

Hello! For my senior year of highschool, i messed up with personal problems and such and didnt apply to any college. I tried to get back up and apply for spring semester for art schools but because of lack of availablity i was not accepted. My second option is to go to a state community college and then transfer to an out of state art school, but i want to know if it’s worth it and if my credits will even be transferable? I would only be going for one semester and then apply to art school for the start of the next school year

Financially, can you easily afford community college? Taking an art class or two might give you projects for your portfolio or keep your skills improving.

Transferring art credits is not common at an art school as they often make everyone start with the same foundation classes. Check with the places you are considering to see if they’d take any studio credits or general education classes like basic composition.

Also, check your CC’s articulation agreements. They may have a state school that accepts credits through their articulation agreements, in art or at least in the liberal-arts foundation courses. Sometimes the articulation agreements are to private schools, too.

You can try googling and and see what pops up. If you find nothing, then your guidance office will have more information.

If you’re doing at art program, great. See if you can also add some additional skills that are in another area. For example, computer programming, or marketing skills, or bookkeeping. Many arts organizations and publishers and the like, they would love to find someone who can do art and also can do these other skills. You’d more likely be able to get a decent job when you graduate.
