Going to a fashion college for pre med courses?

My mom works at the Fashion Institute of Technology. They offer pre med courses, so I could take them there. The best part is that I would go there for free, since she teaches there.

But it is still a fashion college. Would medical schools care about that, or would they really care about my grades?

And what major would you choose? Do they even have a biology or calculus class?

Isn’t FIT part of SUNY? If your mom teaches there, then she would be faculty at a SUNY school, so could the financial benefits be extended to attending another school within SUNY? Somehow I doubt FIT offers things like organic chem. It seems odd to attend FIT for premed if they have Stony Brook and Binghamton, which are inexpensive for in-state.

I think it would be very odd to go to FIT for pre-med. I’m not saying that it would be impossible to get admitted to med school, but I would wonder about the quality of the science and math profs and classes/labs at this school.

Remember, you have to be well-prepared for your MCATs.

Can’t you get a discount at another SUNY?

I’d have to agree with mom2collegekids on this one. FIT does offer organic chem and other prerequisites for med school, but even if you do well on the MCAT’s, you run the risk of being preceived as the Elle Woods of med school. It is possible, however, your unique background would appeal to a medical school admissions officer. I am not making recommendations but I would consider other alternatives unless FIT offers a unique course of study that you are interested in (pre-meds do not have to be science majors) or the alternatives are more expensive and not within your price range. Also remember that many pre-meds change their minds in college.

I would also be concerned about the whole “college experience”. If you want a full college experience, would you get it at FIT? Wouldn’t most of your classmates have vastly different interests than you?

you run the risk of being preceived as the Elle Woods of med school.

lol…expect to be asked how you did in “History of Polka Dots.”

I asked her to talk to the other teachers for me. They said that it was not a good idea, and that the other SUNY colleges were aroundf 5000 dollars tuition. And they don’t offer all the necessary courses- she talked to a science teacher there.

So I guess I’ll look at some of the SUNY schools. Thanks, though.
