Title says it all. I Need some new clothes that help me fit in but I don't have a gazillion dollars that I can spend on 200 dollar polos or whatever, I need advice on clothing : types brands Ie shoes shirts shorts pants accessories etc

IF you don’t mind wearing used clothes, goodwill or savers or whatever secondhand shops you have around there will be your best friend.

are you a girl or a guy? I mostly know what preppy girls wear. Sperry shoes or oxfords, lightweight scarves, j crew, for example. If you’re a guy, pastel shorts and button ups are good for summer. Even if you’re looking for less expensive stuff, make sure the clothes you wear have nice clean lines and good quality fabric. And definitely invest in a nice coat, which goes a long way.

Maybe it was the case 25+ years ago, but today even colleges with the preppiest of preppy reputations don’t have an entire student population that wears polos and dockers. If you feel good about the clothes in your closet now, and they represent who you are, then don’t change. it.

Wear what you want to wear, simple. What @JoBenny said is gold.

Ack. It’s not “preppy”. Preppy is short for preparatory school as in, preparing for college. Now that you’re in college the adjective is not “preppy”. There should be some other word. This always bothers me.

Wear what you want. It looks ridiculous when everyone dresses the same anyway.

I agree with everybody wear what you want. That being said if you want to update your closet your best bets are thrift stores and outlet stores…

Im a guy. I know but I also don’t want to be the odd man out out. Everything I’ve read onlin is that people only wher these types of clothes. Money is not that much of an issue but nothing like $200. I want to be myself bit also want to transition into college well. Besides polos some informal dress shorts khaki pants/shorts and boar shows what else could I buy?

Informal Dress shirts*

Boat shoes*

Sorry for the spelling

I would advise against going full prep. Even on the preppiest of campuses it will look a little ridiculous. There will be kids walking around in nothing but Vineyard Vines and J Crew but honestly they’ll be the outliers. Look at pictures from the college website and notice how many kids are walking around in basic t-shirts and jeans. Buy a pair of Sperrys, a couple of polos (note the small p) on sale, an oxford or two and a pair of khakis. Leave it at that. Unless you really love them don’t bother with the ultra-prep lime green/neon yellow/pink shorts, D-belts, or expensive dress shirts.

IMHO
Long sleeved fitted cotton button down shirts look better than off brand polo shirts.
Good fitted jeans look better than pleated khaki shorts.
Slim flat front pants look better than shorts.
Go to the a bookstore/library.
Look in Esquire,Details, Men’s Vogue magazines for fashion tips.
You will look ridiculous if you try to dress to fit in what you think a preppy W+L student looks like than dressing for comfort and personal style.
Buy fewer pieces but higher quality.
Don’t buy boat shoes unless you actually wear them on a boat.
Don’t look like a pretender.

Thanks this really helps. I’m going to be myself but I also don’t want to be alone clothing attire wise.

Still don’t understand why you’d think that you’re going to be “alone” if you’re not dressed in polo shirts. Not sure what you’re reading…or what college you’re talking about, but it’s just not the case. But whatever.
