Going to an expensive college as a low income student.

My family is low income. Really low income - like, below the poverty line. We're a family of three (technically four, but my older sister is away at college), mom makes less than $16,000 a year, and she won't be able to contribute any money toward my college fund.

Despite this, the vast majority of the colleges I really want to go to run for $35,000+ a year (that's not even including room & board, books, fees, etc.). It isn't the prestige or the name that attracts me to these schools...it's that they're supposed to offer the best programs in my study of interest. But should I even be thinking about going to a pricey college, considering our lack of money? Is my dream of going to one of these expensive colleges unrealistic?

It depends upon your profile (resume) and stats.

This is very basic. If you have high grades and scores the very top schools in the US will welcome you with open arms and give you the necessary funds. Without top stats, pricy schools will most probably be out of reach.
