Going to an out-of-state college. Is it affordable?

I just want to get opinions of students who are in/has been in this position. Are there any fresh out of high school, undergraduate students here who have gone out of their state to attend college for the first time? Did you go to a University or a Community College. If so, has it been affordable and what is it like? I am an undergraduate student and want to go to a different state for college but I can't help but to feel a little scared. I need to hear from someone who's survived this situation :)

Some OOS schools, like U North/South Dakota are relatively affordable. Others like UCB/UMich are not for OOS students. How much can your family afford? What are your stats? I see from prior posts you are from Hawaii.

OOS privates aren’t any more expensive. OOS public schools are more expensive, but a cheap school OOS can be cheaper than an expensive school in-state. Also, there are a lot of public schools that offer really good merit aid that can totally change the financial equation.
