I go to a crappy school in NYC where the average SAT is like 900. Will this hurt me or help me? (I have a 1540) and my rank is VERY BAD!

why is your rank so bad if your school is so bad...?

im stupid and lazy!

but your score is really good!

sooo, will being in a bad school help me?

I don't think so...I mean if you shined at one, and u were rank one yes, but in your case, I don't think it really helps.

ok thanks zantedeschia

I think it can help you if you frame it right. Stress your disadvantage in an essay and explain that the environment you were in didn't encourage education. Stop short of blaming fully blaming other people though.

It is a double edged sword. On one hand it shows you were not prepared well for the top colleges. OTOH, it's not your fault that the school is poor and this too will be taken into consideration.

What is going to hurt you is your high SAT coupled with low rank, This is a serious problem.

Yea that shows that you are smart and can think, but just doesn't want to, especially in a low-performing school.

A high SAT score with a low GPA/rank is a dangerous combination because it shows admissions commitees that you're very intelligent, but just too lazy to do the coursework at your school.

well its not a LOW rank (34/668, approx 5%) but my gpa is pretty low for a bad school (91uw, 94w)
