I wanted to take Calculus I this fall, but the all the classes are filled up. I've spoke with my friends, and they told me to go one of the Calculus classes the first day, and speak to the professor after class because they usually drop students who doesn't show up.

What was your experience with this and were you able to be placed in a spot for your class?

Usually yes you will be able to add if one kid doesn’t show up. Just make sure you are the first one.

On July 12 registration opens up. There will be students who signed up for Calc I just in case, who passed their AP exam and don’t need it. Or there will be students who didn’t pass Trig/Precalc over the summer who can’t take it after all. So on the 12th periodically that day and for as long as the window is open, check for a seat. Do the same on add/drop starting the Saturday before fall classes begin.

If you still don’t have a seat, yes, show up for the class. FSU has a first day rule, if you don’t show up for class on the first day YOUR ARE DROPPED FROM THE CLASS. So go, and if there is someone who does not show, you have a shot at it.

My guess is that you will pick up a seat in July when changes are made by incoming freshman after AP scores are out.

And after the July open registration, they MAY open up more seats or a new section for drop/add. Watch the math dept web site for notices about new sections.

IN THE MEAN TIME fill out a request for the waitlist. https://www.math.fsu.edu/secure/bellenot/waitlist.html This helps them know if they need to add more seats, and they can contact you about placing you in a class if the open seats or add a section.
