Going to film school

Do UChicago grads get into the best film schools (NYU, Columbia, etc.)?

I’m just a senior in HS, but I think that if you get really involved with Doc Films and make your own films, then you can get into a top film school. It’s judged more on what YOU bring to the table than the name of the school you come from. Chicago is good enough that if you are really involved in film as an undergrad and set yourself up for a good grad school application (GPA, test scores, awesome transcript), then you’ve got as good a shot as any. The only way you could be better off is if you went to NYU or Columbia as an undergrad and did all the same activities as you would have at Chicago.

good luck!

It’s Fire Escape Films that you want to be involved with as far as film production is concerned. Doc Films puts on the film series and clearly many students who are into film are active with Doc as well, but the production piece is Fire Escape. There are also limited production courses available in the College. As to whether graduates get into the prestigious graduate film programs like NYU or UCLA, I really don’t have any data.

Chicago is great, but it’s not exactly a magnet for people who know they want to be filmmakers at 18. Maybe it should be, but it isn’t. Even for people who want a solid liberal arts education as a base for making films – i.e., they don’t want to be in the BFA film programs at NYU, UCLA, Emerson – there are other colleges with more of a filmmaking mafia, that DO send a steady stream of graduates to top MFA programs, and also let you do a lot more filming for credit than Chicago does. Wesleyan, Northwestern, and Brown leap to mind; I’m sure there are others as well.

Thanks for the responses. I know about Wesleyan and some other schools like that, but I just like UChicago better.

Is Fire Escape a club? I know about Doc Films but not this one

Yes, it is one of our RSOs (registered student organizations). You can find out more about it at [Fire Escape Films](http://www.fireescapefilms.com/).

wow that looks great thanks
