So far I have been accepted by Georgia Tech, Illinois, Michigan, Kettering, and Purdue.
I was denied admission by Cooper Union, apparently I wasn't good enough! Didn't surprise me much since Cooper Union is supposed to be like THE university to go to!

I am waiting for UCB, Carnegie, Cornell, National University of Singapore, and Rice to get back to me. I didn't realize while applying and ended up applying to TOO many Universities but that was an experience too!! Its fun receiving acceptance offers by Universities, although it does suck when you get rejected or rather "Deferred" which is a more subtle way of saying "You aren't good enough Kid!"

Since HKUST gave me a full scholarship and is only a 3 year course for Engineering and has an amazing and humungous campus and is close to home, I have accepted the admission offer to HKUST!

Will be going to Hong Kong in August this year to get accustomed to the place and start College in September!!

Thanx Anand!
I applied early November and got a accepted on 5th January, which is strange cause they normally dont give out an acceptance so early, and they were like rushing me by asking me to give a deposit of HK $10,000 by the 20th!!

Hey lostmarch!
No thats what i found strange I had no interview! I was offered the scholarship and admission directly on the basis of my application!

Thanks jakewhaat!
However, its not really brave of me to make this decision, cause i’m an expat! Living out of the country, starting again from the beginning, constantly trying to prove yourself, all these words have a strong bonding with an expat kid’s life!!
And I kind of like changes !!

I am an INDIAN… an have applied to HKUST and HKU both.
I have applied for BBA and BBA(A&F) and Global Business.

I would be giving my ISC this year in march.I got 80% in ICSE( req. are 75% but in actual it seems to be higher).Band 7.0 in IELTS and a few extra-curricular activities certificates.

DO I stand any chance of admission?
Please Help…
Plzzz…

Thats nice to know. From what I have heard, the Business program at HKUST is great!!

To be honest the admissions are really competitive, so it might be a bit difficult, but you should still give it a shot in any case !

Everyone who has applied to HKUST that I know of has been as good as me, if not better! I did my ICSE too and got 95.6%, and am doing IB now and have 38/45 points, and still I was a bit iffy about me getting in HKUST!

Although your marks are above the min required and your IELTS are decent too, I think you would definitely more than qualify for admission, but it all depends on how competitive the other applicants are! which this year they seem to be really up on their grades!
I think you can enhance your chances of getting and make your application seem as competent as the others by putting up your SAT scores, TOEFL, or any other additional tests that you might have taken and got a high mark in!

About the extra-curricular activities, I know someone who has played 12 years of ice hockey for his state in Canada, and I for example play 7 school sports and am the captain for the Internation team for Badminton and Volleyball… so what I mean is you need a lot of activities, or few really good (national/state level) activities…

Oh one last advice the Asian Universities seem to LOVE Scholarship exams like Science Olympiads at cetera…

Work hard on your University essays, put down good activities, and try getting some extra tests’ marks and I think you will have a 10 times better chance of getting in than now!

Let me know if you have any further questions!

Yeah i have decided to go to Hk cause of 7 strong reasons!!
Have been accepted by 9 Universities till now 7 in US, and still HKUST seems like the strongest to me!
And as you said Hong Kong is awesome isnt it!!! I remember the first time I went, I was 6-7, I only went to the Airport and was soo happy only with that! Its humongous and still awesome!!

Oh and guys I just heard from Rose-Hulman University in US, which is the Rank 1 Undergraduate University for Mechanical Engineering in US!! They have accepted me and have offered me the Scholarship tooo!!! But as i said before i’m still going to HKUST! :D

Oh cool ! Lot of my friends who are from Hk are also going back for Uni to Hk, and few of them to the same Uni as me, HKUST!
Hey I have just started a thread asking for people to critique my University decision! It’ll be great if you could help !
Basically I am choosing HKUST over a lot of GOOD US Universities, like University of Michigan and U or California Berkeley, and Rose-Hulman, that I have been accepted to!! Soo just wanna make sure am doing the right thing!

I just posted a new thread asking for people to critique my decision of going to HKUST:

I’ll copy Paste the info here:

"Hey guys!
I have decided to go to HKUST, as I have mentioned in my thread before, just want to make sure I’m right in choosing it over US and UK!
Please tell me what you think !!

Universities accepted to:
Georgia Tech, Illinois, U Michigan, Purdue, Rose-Hulman, Kettering, Franklin W. Olin, Imperial (UK), HKUST, University of Texas-Austin, University of California-Berkeley.

Waiting to hear from:
National University of Singapore, Rice, Cornell, Carnegie Melon.

Rejected/Deferred by:
Cooper Union

Reasons for going to HKUST:
3 years course instead of 4
Asian experience and can learn Mandarin (Chinese)
Cheap and also Full Scholarship offered to me (US around quarter of a million dollars)
Close to home (parents live in Shanghai right now, and we are Indians, so India is close too)
Hong Kong is a BEAUTIFUL place and the HKUST Campus is amazing!!!
Big University (unlike Rose-Hulman, Kettering, Olin, and Cooper Union)
Great for Mechanical Eng, was established in 1991, and is already 24 in World Rankings!!
Economy and Job market is strongly moving towards Asia, China being the hub !!
Can do my Post Grad from Stanford, or MIT in US and get that exposure too, plus will take the exchange program at HKUST for a term in US!

What do you guys think ?!?! Any suggestions, criticism will be of GREAT help !"

oh well if I were you I would definitely choose U Mich or UC Berkeley. Why? Because as i said, I’m actually from Hong Kong. I would rather study in the U.S to gain more new experiences. BUT your situation is different from mine =] Studying in other country is a pretty interesting experience.
