going to instate college, but my parents are moving after my graduation.

hi
i might be going to va tech this fall as an incoming freshman.
im a virginia resident so i get in state tuition.
however, my parents are moving to new york after my high school graduation.
does it affect my instate tuition after my first year?
will i have to pay out of state tuition afterward?

I would contact the financial aid office, but I believe you will have to pay OOS tuition. I teach at JMU and have a student in a similar situation I believe that he now pays OOS tuition. I could be wrong, though.

Good advice on contacting the school from KatMT. Here are the VT residency requirements. http://www.admiss.vt.edu/forms/Residency_Instructions.PDF</a> They do seem to say that you get residency based on your parents so if they move… Some schools do allow you to retain residency but it’s unclear from this information.

The question is whether every student refiles residency forms every year? If not, then the school probably keeps you the residency status you had at entrance, but call and ask hypothetically what they would do.

For students going to college right after high school, many states base residency on the senior year of high school and where the parents resided then. Then, residency doesn’t change once the child is enrolled.

However, your particular state may have different rules. My kids have not had to prove that we still live in state year after year.
