Going to Med School After the Academy

Hey everyone!

So i just went to a college nite specifically for the service academies and rotc prgrams. Anyway, I talked to a representitive from the USAFA and she said that only like 8 cadets go to medical school from the acedemy each year. She also made sure to point out that it was “Extremely Extremely Extremely competitive”.

My question is, does the Air Force only allow 8 students to even apply each year? Will the USAFA not allow qualified cadets to apply if they need the cadet in another capacity? Or are the qualifications so rigid that only 8 students make it?

My ultimate goal is to be a doctor, and i beginning to reconsider if the USAFA would really be the right place for me.

Some clarification would be great.

This has been addressed before so I will give the short version:
At your heart do you want to be a doctor or an officer?
If you want to be a doctor your chances will be much better if you go to a civilian school and then apply for a medical scholarship when you go to med school, however if you want to be an officer this is one of the best leadership schools in the nation.

I am sure someone will point out that in his chosen major, biochem, 100% of qualified cadets get into medical school, so it is possible, but you will really have to want it and work for it.

as many people can apply as are eligible, but there just aren't that many slots. i have a friend who graduated last year ('08) and is currently in medical school. his girlfriend is an '09 grad and also received a slot to med school. so its definetely possible, just difficult.

also, keep in mind that while there is not a "pre-med major", there are courses designed to help you get there and faculty that will help you out too

Blue suiter said it best...Officer or Doctor...realize that no matter what you do in the AF, you will always be an AF officer first...your specialty, even as a doc becomes secondary.

The actual quota for Medical school is around 18 slots, not 8. The chemistry department here has sent more cadets to med/dental school in the last four years (39) than to pilot training (33).
